Labsub grills
« on: September 21, 2009, 10:58:21 PM »

Damn, I just spend an hour of my like retrieving part of a ratchet strap that had found its way into the throat.
I had to pull one driver and there it was laying on the other driver's cone.  The last guy to tumble this one should have rolled it the other way.  I guess it's time for a grill.

Its been maybe seven years since I looked at those drivers.  I was afraid I'd find the surround decomposing however, much to my surprise they looked new, like the day I installed them. Good job Eminence.

I wish I could say the same for the cabinets.  'Tis time for paint and grills.

I've only briefly looked into getting grills cut and bent, and I haven't yet found someone that really specializes in this. I want to have the perforated metal sheared or cut to size and then the edges bent over to make a nice, easily-secured recessed grille. It also should be powder coated black or painted with something extreme.

I'm thinking anything, even down in the flare to keep stuff out of the throat.  Perf metal, hardware cloth, screen, chicken wire...

Why not use grille cloth on a 3/4" Baltic Birch frame?
No resonance, easy to make, far less bucks, looks good.

You can get a 4x10 sheet of 16 guage perforated metal for around 100 bucks. just have a sheetmetal shop sheer them to size. Remember to allow an extra 3/4 of an inch on the edges to bend over to a 90. You can actually hammer the corners over yourself just by securing the sheet to a metal table or bench, leaving the edge to hang over, then clamp a chunk of flat metal or even wood to the top, then start dollying the edge over till its at a 90 degrees. do all 4 sides like this. It works very well. If your flushed with cash then just get the sheetmetal shop to bend the edges for you with their brake. Very Happy

Or,

Have them complete custom punched and bent.
Like this (from a different cab):

No extra material paid for, Maybe will come down to about the same cost.

I bought this and went to a sheet metal shop with specific instructions about cuts and bends.  Quick, easy, and inexpensive

EDIT-- Yikes!  I didn't realize the thread was this old....
