Curtians and firecode in North Carolina.
« on: March 04, 2011, 06:24:36 PM »

Not sure where to post this so if there's a more appropriate forum feel free to move it there.

So I'm wondering if anybody has had any experiences in North Carolina concerning curtains and fire inspectors lately?

I know the materials must be fire treated or rated by the manufacturer and that they cannot be handing from the ceiling or attached to a wall but must be free standing.

I understand one of the most cost effective methods is to treat materials yourself vs. buy name brand expensive rated materials.

Of course we'll consult with the inspector as soon as we have time before we make any plans.

Is the State Fire Marshall the Authority Having Jurisdiction or is the County or City the AHJ?  Not only is it important to know who is the responsible party, but that could also affect the applicable requirements as local codes may reference the State codes but they may also add to or modify them.  So the first step may be finding out which codes are actually applicable and who is the Authority Having Jurisdiction.

One potential issue with DIY fire retardant treatments is that the result is not certain.  Are you willing to lose some curtains if required to demonstrate the effectiveness of the treatments?

Thanks for the info Brad.

Yea we expect to have to demonstrate effectiveness. We had to last time we hung the single curtain we have now and should we do it again we would expect to demonstrate that again.

As in, you can't drop chain from the grid for a curtain? And you can't put a curtain over a window with a regular curtain rod and brackets!?  :-\
