3D / Hologram projection
« on: June 13, 2009, 02:44:10 AM »

Hi,

I've got an enquiry on doing this for a live setting. I remember reading about it, where a gauze-type screen is mounted on stage, and images appear to float in mid-air beside live people on the same stage, but can't seem to find it now.
any one have pointers on doing this, any resources to learn more about doing this?

thanks,
sheldon

Nope, not so much 3D, more like a hologram, where a projected person or object seems to float on stage, beside a live person.
I remember something like a gauze material rigged diagonally top to bottom upstage, then a projector from just below the front edge of the stage... not too clear on the details, though.

Justin Timberlake did this a few years ago.

A quick trip to Youtube ought to get you what you need;

This is being done at InfoComm show entrance. Projector above shooting down to screen flat on floor, and translucent material across projection at a 45 degree angle to reflect that image forward with stage behind. Google pepper's ghost for more information.  I'm on show floor now, if I remember I'll get the name of the company that did this one.

this is not 3d or a hologram it is old fasioned "Pepper's Ghost"
using a "foil" (reflective material) at a 45degree angle to projector and audience--this stunt was around before video existed--it has been revived suposedly by Musion Eyeliner
even though disney has been using it for years--I contacted the eyeliner folks a few years back but the $ were astounding--you can use a piece of plexi with some window tint on and a projector if you do not need to go stage sized

do a google search for "pepper's ghost" and "Musion Eyeliner"
