Why don't you give Bogen a call and explain your problem? I'm sure they would be more than happy to help you sort your issue out, even if it means sending the ringer in for repairs.

Yes, it seems weird to me too. You'd think they be labeled + / -
or something to that effect. I have tried reversing those wires. It makes no difference. I have the manual for the ringer, but it is not very clear on this. See...maybe I am screwing something up here.

Actually, looking at the manual here it states:

"Connect the shield from the BGM source to the same letter (A or B)terminal as the shield for the amplifier input to the AMP A & B terminals. If the amplifier inputs are balanced this precaution is not necessary. "

Night ringer has input terminals for BGM but that are unused. So it should make no difference how I connect those wires(although I did try switching them to no avail).

I don't believe the channel gain is set too high. It's a usable volume.

You need to listen to the feed from the ringer. It may already have the hum as audio. Maybe it is the ringer that is bad, maybe that is just how it sounds.

What Mac is trying to say is that you should own a Q box Smile

You have to listen to the Bogen output to make sure it's not defective. Rig up an adapter for your headphones (you do have some headphones don't you?) and check the output. Make the connection before you put the headphones on/in your ear so you won't get a nasty pop in your ear if there's some DC leaking out of the Bogen.

If it sounds ok then it somehow related to the unbalanced input on the amp.

That's a great idea. I have phones and a HP amp. I'll take a quick listen next time I'm on site.
Thanks for all the suggestions so far guys.

Re: Bizarre wiring on install-Divide and conquer-BATTERY POWER
« Reply #35 on: June 05, 2009, 07:37:18 PM »

Make sure the amp is a BATTERY powered unit.  If you plug it into an AC source you may still "appear" to have a problem.  That is why Mac suggest the Q box.

If you are going to do this type of work, a few basic tools are needed-and the Qbox or similar is a good start.

You HAVE to stay away from ALL other wiring when listening-to make sure it is not any sort of connection to other gear that is being the problem.

make sure you disconnect the ringer from the amp before you listen.

Probably won't need the headphone amp.

Judt a thought, what is the output level of one of these night ringers. If it's line level going into the mic level unbalanced input could that be the beef?
I'll have time to check it next week.

Hence my earlier question about level.

Got a ZM-104. I'll be able to go in and measure these mysterious speaker lines, but won't have easy access to the horns. What is the math for figuring out total wattage with this tool when the only info I'll have is impedance?
Thanks,
BJ

Edited to add: I found it.

watts= 4900/impedance
