Mac 550 , moving light purchase dicision need help!
« on: April 23, 2009, 09:59:39 AM »

Hello,
I have a  need for 8 movers, mostly 575w spot. Want to spend around 2.5k for each fixture used. I found some used Mac 550 fixture without roadcase for that amount, is that a good buy? I read the Mac 550 spec, it's only a 400w short arc lamp. How is that output compared to the older Mac 500, or any other 575w spot mover on the market?
Please advise. thanks

look into high end studio spot 575s, personally i like them better than the 550s, and they're cheaper too...there's a bunch on solaris right now for ~$2k a fixture

$2.5k/fixture for 550s is about average

comparing a 550 to a 500 or sp575, the 550s going to be a bit less bright, but you may prefer the features of it to the other lights available (gobos, colors, misc other functions, etc)

I'm not really a fan of used moving heads - but if your gonna buy em don't buy Martin. Those fixtures were plagued with bad wiring harnesses. Martin used some really crappy copper and I've had nothing but problems with any of those lights coming across on my bench. The HES, Robe, or Elation are much better fixtures in that price range imo.

I agree with the Studio Spot 575s.  I've got a bunch of them and they are my favorite fixture in my inventory, hands down.  Very reliable, good intensity, great collection of features, and they come in color mixing (CMY) versions.

Wattage will impact output, but so will the rest of the light train (quality of the reflector, design, lens quality, number of wheels and quality, etc.).  The 550 is a good fixture.  It can do a lot.  If you're buying used, issues such as condition, price, accessories (are you getting cases, clamps, etc. with them?) etc. come in to play.  Also depends on what you have already and what you need, what your clients want, etc.

Just throwing this out there... If you do buy used.  Develop a great relationship with a parts supplier...

My church has 8 cyber SV's and 8 Studio Colors that are 11 years old...

We started repairing the lights ourselves with parts and great advice from the folks at lightparts.com

They will actually talk you through your problem.

Great people, great customer service - we will keep buying stuff from them.
