In my opinion, I'd buy a two channel compressor from a better name brand like dbx, then use one channel of it inserted into the channel insert for your Pastor's mic, then the other channel inserted into the bass guitar's channel if you don't have that already.

Your settings for your Pastor would probably be like a ratio of 2.5:1 with a threshold of -10 then set a decently fast attack and medium slow release. A lot of compressors have that 'Auto' function you could just use instead, it overrides the attack/release controls and adjusts it automatically for you if you'd rather do that.

My favorite is the DBX 286A. It provides a compressor, gate, de-esser, and a little eq. On my mackie SR/32, I use the insert on the pastor's channel, into a DBX 31-band graphic (so you can EQ squeals on the lapel mic w/o EQ-ing your whole system), then out of the EQ into the 286A. Killer sound!
