Typical Harmonic Content bellow Tuning

    Hey All I was just wondering if anyone here has any Idea what the typical Harmonic content generated by driving a Vented Cabinet bellow tuning.

    Also typical distortion from reaching xmax.

    Perhaps even the harmonic content from sealed and open air speakers.

    I have a nord modular sitting around and am interested in playing with Line 6 like speaker modeling.

    I think the first step is to create a characteristic speaker eq/voice shape.  To simulate the nominal tonal characteristic.

    I don't know that any of the speaker modeling people are actually trying to simulate speaker distortions, which I think is just as important as simulating speaker voicing.

    So one Idea I wanted to try is to use the nord modular to:

A: Simulate speaker Voice (Sounds pretty good so Far).
B: Simulate Out of Range Distortion (Vented Cab)
C: Simulate Xmax Distortion
D: Simulate Cone Breakup Distortion (I think thats the hardest to figure out).

    I think a lot of these things need to be threshold triggered, where once the Threshold is triggered the distortion will start be added and change with Magnitude.

    Sounds like a fun DSP synth Patch to build.

    Anyhow Just playing around.

“Typical” distortion from reaching xmax varies quite a bit, probably another reason why there are so many types of guitar speakers.

Same with driving speakers below cabinet tuning, different types sound different.

I really have not spent much time looking at speaker distortion, but looking at the harmonic cascade generated with high power sine wave tones in three different speakers I own look quite different.

I agree the speaker modeling would need to be threshold triggered, and several thresholds could be reached, for example even order harmonics initially, and driven further, add odd order harmonics.

    The right way to do it I guess would be to put the drivers in question through stress tests, and measure the results.

    But for now I'll make some semi informed guesses and play around.
