Hello all,

As I've been building my PA setup I've got enough rackmount equipment now to justify getting a rack to mount it in. The gear I'll be mounting is:

Furman PL-Plus DMC (10.5" D 1U)
Rane DC24 (5.3" D 1U)
Rane AC23B (5.3" D 1U)
Rane ME60 (8.5" D 2U)

So thats 5U worth of rack equipment and I would want to leave some room for a little expansion which is why I'm going with an 8U rack.

I have 2 questions, the first is whether I should go with a shallower rack by EWI (12" deep) or if it would be better for some reason to go with a 14"? (I can't see any reason right now I would need an 18" deep.)

My other question is about EWI itself, are they a good company? I've known Road Ready to be the standard as far as cases go. The EWI is significantly cheaper at $120 as opposed to $225 for the Road Ready.

Get the EWI case. The good folks at audio pile are great to work with and sell a quality product. Get the 14" one to allow room for deeper pieces of gear, and room for coiling cables in the back of the rack.

I've got EWI cases and Road Ready cases and both are about the same build quality. Go for the better price, and as Evan said, Audiopile are great folks to deal with.

EWI is every bit as good as RR (I have both).

Audiopile is much easier to deal with.

(RR sent me on an endless run-around (when the interior lid on a mike case warped.)

As for depth?

I keep at the deeper size as they pack equally in the trailer - and give me more room between the back of equipment and the patch panels on the rear rails.      

I use the very narrow just for Monitor EQs and for the "walk-in" gig rack.

I'm planning on installing patch panels on the back for easy inputs and thru outs. What kind of setup do you use? Mind taking some pictures?

I have an even better idea for you!

Buy the EWI rack from Audiopile!  Then buy the PFQ-101 or PFQ 202 and get the appropriate cables either ADMQ 15-16 or ADMF 15-16 or the 15' DM Patch depending on your applications!  Then buy a couple TRS cables to patch your gear into the PFQ and you are up and running with a very clean looking and easy to connect setup for less money than making your own and you don't have to track down the silly crimp tools for a multipin connector.

In addition to Audiopile having a bunch of cool products at great prices, Liz and Mark are WAAAAYYYYY cool people to do business with.  They are by far my favorite supplier just because of how nice they are!

Between Road Ready and EWI, I prefer EWI. We've had a few RR racks and cases which haven't held up that well, but no problems with the EWI.

Ditto on the EWI, and what the others have said about Audiopile. BTW, I would advise against the deeper cases for signal processing units - unless you plan to put patch panels on the rear, as the deeper cases make it harder to patch to the units. I have a 12U of the least deep of all the EWI offerings, and it's full up. My fault for having 2U EQ's..

Hmm. I took a look at what you're suggesting but I don't believe that's what I need. He patchbay I would build would have L/R XLR in, L/R XLR out, and L/R XLR thru. All of my connections at this time are XLR not TR/TRS.

I've never seen a patchbay like that before though, what would it commonly be used for?

Multi-pin cable stays connected to mixer in it's case.  You show up to the gig, take the EDAC cable and plug it into the connector on the patch panel, everything has just been plugged in in less than 30 seconds.  No worries about patching incorrectly because it is always the same once you set it up correctly the first time.
