I may have inherited $$$?
« on: February 08, 2009, 05:32:26 PM »

 Hello,

Seems a new "scam" is going around...

I received an Email from a Barrister named Edwin R.J. Kennedy from London, England, stating that a Man, with the same last name, and his family was killed in a tragic auto accident approximately nine months ago.

He "searched" for any living relatives in Europe with the same last name and found none. My name came up on the World Wide Web.

This man worked for a Company called Multimedia Partners Ltd. of London.

I, of course did not respond to the Email address, but, what is really strange is that he did include a street address in the city.

I'm certain this is a scam of some type, but I will send a letter if the address can be verified.

My girlfriend says "it's probably another child you didn't know about.... from your London days."  Rolling Eyes

Cheers,
Hammer

ps. "look a gift horse in the mouth!"

Charlie,

Another 419 scam (Nigerian Fraud). I think this is the same guy mentioned in a previous thread. You might find the same address in the data wales link. Sending a letter with your address is inviting trouble. Very large Africans, usually armed, will arrive on your doorstep. Often accompanied by their new accomplices from china and other far eastern countries.

I don't see any Barrister of that name, who is registered with the Bar Council in the UK.

Don't reply in any way.  They will continue to spam you even when you expose their nonsense as I did.  http://www.sarasotaslim.com/images/scamcheck72dpi.jpg

I'm not worried about large Nigerians knocking on my door - they would never set foot on USA soil 'cause they know they could go to prison for fraud if they do.  The Nigerian government provides a safe haven for the whole government sanctioned enterprise of scamming the rest of the world so they they are only safe in their home country.  Regardless of where the so called addresses appear to come from most of the scams originate from Nigeria.  You have your scammin' Nigerians and your Somali pirates - if they merge they'll be the SCAMMIN' PIRATES! Hello,

Thanks Iain, Gene, and all.... I knew it was a scam, and with the net, it's too easy to check on someones story anyway....

As Andy had said, they would have sent a letter via the mail system.

I was thinking of having some fun with them, if they were closer in proximity I might have, but, then again.... ?

Cheers,
Hammer

Whenever I get these emails I just reply back "I have forwarded your email and contact info to the Internet Crime Complaint Center" and include this link.

I never hear back from them for some reason.  Twisted Evil

Whenever you reply you just give them a confirmed working email address they can sell to other spammers.

By all means forward them to legitimate spam killers, but I wouldn't reply directly.

I have traced spammers spoofing my corporate email to send spam to 3rd parties (since sometimes I get the bounces)  but there is little I can do to obscure IPs in distant countries.

Luckily most serious spam chasers can see through crude header spoofs. but I've had one of my mail servers gray listed before since it was shared by someone who got infected. happiness is multiple mail servers, etc.

I had 3 separate emails last year purporting to be from Malaysian Lawyers offering similar services - namely someone with the same surname as me had died and left several million dollars. The names of the solicitors were pukka (I checked this out quite simply) but the email addresses were Hotmail addresses, and I simply can't believe that a large firm of lawyers would be using Hotmail email addresses (no email addresses were listed on the Malaysian register). I simply sent copies of the emails to the (real)lawyers in Malaysia and let them sort it out.
I worked in the Telecoms business for many years and know that certain countries are out of bounds business-wise  because of the endemic fraud - Nigeria, although probably the worst offender, is only one of them. One company I worked for provided one of its customers with telecoms call-cards for it's employees - within a few hours of the issue, one particular card had been used to make several hundred, concurrent, calls to Nigeria. Luckily our fraud unit was on the ball and the scam was nipped in the bud very quickly so within a couple of hours the card was blocked. The employee in question funnily enough was Nigerian and vehemently denied any wrong doing but was found out because numbers he himself had dialled using his card matched the number of some of the originating calls which were implicated in the scam.
Just be careful!

regards,
Trevor

  Hello,

No... I didn't respond. I used the Anti-viral, software to check the Email and listed it as "junk", after I had written down the Attorney's address. The address will automatically be blocked from future Emails.

No mail will be sent to the address by me, I checked and found no such Lawyer listed. (Iain provided the same info)

I presumed it was a scam, but because of another similar incident regarding "lost" relatives, I wanted to be certain.  Smile

And, No Chris... I do not know anything about a "King Ralph".

Thanks,

Hammer

Hmmm, possibly disguising one's self as a US or UK banker might have worked, but now we are all suspicious of them too ...
