I agree and that is why i would want you to head up the selection and rules commitee..if need be we could charge a nominal admission to help curb the costs, like you and harry and as well tie in maybe a smaart class as well as maybe a seminar on running a succesful audio or production company and get a dave shadoan or someone to share the wisdom and love, maybe a demo of Simm...It can go anywhere we want....thx  randy

here is my vote for line arrays
EV XLD281
JBL Vertec 4887a
Turbosound flex array
Nexo s/8 and 12
Meyer Melodie
QSC wideline 8 and 10
EAW 730

thanks
Ron

I'd rather see the EV XLC there over the XLD.

Don't forget dV-dosc and d&b Q1. 2 big players!

Also, I think we should pick 1 sub(if you even run subs), and stick with it for all of the tests. That way we arent fooled by output when one sub has more output then another. This is a line array listening party, not a sub listening party!

And, I think someone should have SMAART up and running so we can gather some data...

I would suggest somebody with a multiple mic measurement rig so you can get data from up close to a fair bit away-and inbetween.

Of course all the arrays would have to be in the same position-OR put the mics a bit off axis (which might be very revealing)-and in between the arrays-so one could be rigged and another torn down at the same time.

And by using multiple mics it could be done and with repeatability that moving a single mic would be hard to do.

So you would need Smaart V6 or Systune or Easera pro etc.

Another cool thing to do-at least on one array-maybe "the winner", would be to leave the mics in place and use different aiming/alignments and compare to the prediction software, the results.

Hi Evan

Sorry Evan I forgot about dV-dosc and d&b Q1 as I seldom see any around Chicago, But I would like to see those also.

Maybe it would be smart to compare line arrays meant for certain markets?

Like 3 different categories.

"Budget" Line arrays:
PV Versarray
JBL VRX
VTC

"Mid Priced" line arrays:
Geo S12
EV XLC
VT4887
KF730

"High end" line arrays:
dV-dosc
Q1
Flex
Melodie

Thoughts? I think that would make for a more "fair" comparison. Instead of comparing like Q1's to VTC.

Hey Evan, i agree but I like this designation better

130 db and below

130 to 139 db

139 and over

I think we don't need to worry about the 139 and over for this first event, i would concentrate on all of the pro class brands under 139...I also do not think we should do any copies from you know where...

OK so i will host, provide a venue and the rigging and power

we need a 3-4 person rules and selection commitee

a smaart team

and a organizer

i would like to nominate Doug Fowler as the head of the rules and selection committe, and also Harry Brill to be the Smaart Guru

and for Organizer we need someone who can do just that, i will assist with logistics and the local area stuff

lets do this, i'm thinking a Sunday in march  (after 16th) and will try to get rational Acoustics to do a 2-3 day smaart class in conjunction...Ok so lets get going

I really don't think that is a valid, or smart way to classify speakers. Every manufacturer has a different way to get the numbers on their spec sheets, and most of them are "Calculated," rather then measured. Plus, most of the guys list the "SPL" from 4 cabs, not one.

It would be interesting to see if the cabs actually live up to their max SPL figures, but I really don't think it's a good way to group them. I want to get away from the paper specs and not base this off what the manufacturer wants us to believe.

I agree since a majority of companies do evaluate the SPL, a larger factor in purchasing is Cost and Size. So we come back to exactly what criteria are we considering to be a "small" line array? Do we go by driver size? weight? SPL? Right now we have such a large variety of sizes for this "listening demo" it needs to be specified. Just my .02
