Active Speaker Options for Small Club?
« on: February 10, 2009, 02:54:12 PM »

My client has a small club (maybe 2500 sq. feet, long with high ceilings). They originally installed four dreadful EON clones that sound like absolute crap.

Since they're already wired with both the power and balanced lines for these four active monitors, plus two more, unused lines, they want to know if they can save some labor by installing better powered speakers.

I don't have any experience with anything but passive installs, so I'm wondering if anyone else might.

These are a couple of JBL options that my guy carries:

JBL 20PRX515

JBL 20PRX535

It all depends on how the speakers are deployed to cover the audience. What you want to buy will vary depending on how it will be used and what it will be expected to do. That said, if you are going to spend the money to upgrade, you should do more of an upgrade than from one plastic JBL to another.

Illustrations of the audience layout, and the way the speakers will be installed will make it almost possible to make a good recommendation.

It's basically a large bar, maybe 100 x 25' with 12' ceilings. They have DJ's playing loud music and the audience is scattered throughout the bar.

I'm trying to talk them into passive EAW's but they want an estimate that includes powered speakers, for the reason mentioned above.

Why 4 speakers? Why 6? How are they going to be used? Where are they going to be mounted?

The PRX are plastic?

I thought they were a wooden cabinet with a protective coating.

If you want to simply replace the EON copies with something much better sounding, the PRX are a fine n dandy choice.

Thanks. That's what I was looking for, some experience with these active speakers.

The JBL PRX series are not a plastic cabinet.

They are a plywood cabinet with top and bottom "plastic" caps over the plywood.

Get a quote on some EV ZXA5's... They will Kill the Eon's and most of the PRX.

Thanks, I'll do that. Still pushing them to go with a passive EAW-based system but am grateful for the advice regarding my parallel quote on an active setup.

There are good self-powered EAW's too.

look at the NT series

I won't recommend the subs, but the tops sound really good and are fly-able.
