"Green" Certification
« on: January 09, 2009, 03:42:18 PM »

Does anybody know of any "Green" certification that is relevant to the AV Design/Integration industry? I am interested in pursuing some type of certification that allows me to certify systems as "Green". Are there any A/V manufacturers that are certifying their products as green? I have looked into LEED certification but this only seems relevant to complete building certification. I do AV Design mainly for Corporate and Commercial installation's. Most of these are new buildings but some are retools of existing systems.

Is LEED the only way to go?

it depends how you are trying to BE "green"

simply telling customers that you are aware of LEED and then outlining what you can do to help them in becoming LEED certified may be all you need.

or are you trying to convince customers that you are green around the shop?

I am interested in getting some personal "Green" certification that would qualify me to design "Green" systems.

Agreed, "Green" seems to be much more a marketing and general concept than any specific criteria or certification. At least I am not aware of anything other than LEED certification and even then there is currently really nothing AV can typically do towards getting LEED points for a building's certification.

that's the conclusion I came to. the only thing I could think of to be green (although you're right it wouldn't help earn LEED points) was to have the amps auto power down when not in use and then trigger them to come back on when there's signal. but then paging wouldn't work very well so that was scrapped.

in the long run, if you don't have to worry about being cost-competitive you could promise customers that all removed equipment was properly recycled instead of being sent to a landfill, but I think that gets expensive.

There are lots of things you can do from tying AV control systems into building management systems to supporting manufacturers that have 'green' policies for old products and new product processes to implementing videoconferencing to cut down on travel and many others, but very rarely will such actions be able to earn LEED points unless there are simply no other building systems that qualify.

The last time I checked, AV systems didn't emit any kind of harmful gasses or have emissions problems  Smile

Other than using all RoHS certified equipment, I don't see any way to achieve anything "Green" in AV system design. They (AV systems) consume far less energy than almost any other facet of a facility, so they are already kinda green anyway. Oh, and you can forget using the new Soundweb London's. They aren't green anymore either.

Just wait a year or two, and there will be another universe saving bandwagon to jump on.

Altec was green, and changed to black, long before that.
