Best way to balance lights
« on: December 06, 2008, 10:03:36 PM »

So...in the past I have used the point and shoot method of lights, no real system to any of it, but I think I need a better plan.

I have 16 PAR64s (with mixed bulb types [all 500W] but I am going to replace with all MFLs)

I have 4 Source4 Parnels.

So what I was going to do is place all 20 fixtures across the front truss 4 red, 4 green, 4 blue and 4 yellows.  Then use the 4 source 4s for a white wash when needed.  I have 4 roboscan 812s across a much smaller back truss as well (all in sync, but random, I have them on 2 channels of a switch pack).

There are also 4 500W quartz lights for blinders on switch packs, I know they arn't as good as real ACLs but they are cheap.

So what do you think I should change, esp in terms of the colors...

Hey Will,

What kind of shows and what is the distance/angle of the truss from the stage?

Well my next show is Rock / Electronica...the mains usually fly from the truss, but if the roof is too low then I'll have to stack the mains and move the truss back to get enough distance.

For a rock type show I'd try to put most of your par cans on the back truss.  Four each of medium red, blue, and either a salmon pink, amber or purple.  Blinders on the back truss as well.

Try your parnels gelled with bastard amber on each of the performers in the front, and take your four remaining par cans and gel them with red and blue.  You should be able to mix these with the parnels and get a usuable warm or cool wash when you want it.

YMMV,
