2000w Tree Mounted Dimmer Pack
« on: November 01, 2008, 12:08:37 AM »

Does anyone make a dimmer pack that will mount on a tree and give me 2 channels capable of 2000 watts each?  I've seen a few 6ch, 2 circuit units each allowing you to plug ONE light ch's 1-3 and another into ch's 4-6 with a maximum of 16 or 16 amps per line, but I want to be able to plug in a 2000 watt light (aprx 16.7amps).

The reason I want this is because some of my work involves film and video where 2000 watt fixtures are not uncommon.  This way the dimmer pack could become multi purpose.  I could use it for simple stage / rock & roll lighting, or for studio video jobs as well.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Tom

Elation has a 6 channel model which has supplies 20 amps to two sets of channels.
The manual says that the full 20 amps load can be connected to one channel in each set.
http://www.elationlighting.com/product.asp?ProductIDNumber=1 412&cat=Dimmers%20and%20Relays

By my calculations that gives you the ability to dim two 2400 watt fixtures.

Entertainment Technology (www.etdimming.com) makes a 3 channel, 20A/channel tree-mount pack.  L21-20 input only, though AFAICT.

Phil,

I saw that and was seriously considering it, however then I received the following in an email from Elation regarding the DP640B:

"We pulled one and it has a sticker (news to us) that state 5.3 amps max per channel. channels 1-3 16 amps max"

So... now I'm not sure what to think.  Has anyone ever used one of the DP640B's with 2000 watt fixture?

Thanks,
Tom

Rob,

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately I really want something that can also be a 4 or 6ch dimmer for fixtures of lower wattages.  Additionally I want it to connect using standard Edisons.

Thanks,
Tom

Hello Tom;

Check CAE Leprecon's web site, open the PDF and read the fine print where they mention 20 amp rated models also being available.  I've no experience with their newer, current, generation but their older products were extremely solid.
They do mention each channel now having 25 amp SCRs and I believe, if anything like their older models, their 20 amp series will include 20 amp magnetic breakers per line cord and versions with 2 - 20 amp rated mains cords per pack.
Not the cheapest dimmers, but very reliable and backed by support similar to ETC's.
Again, I can only speak for their recently discontinued series.

Toodleoo!

Ron you are dead on, I just picked up a pallet of Leprecon stuff for a project and not only do they continue their history of being extremely solid but they also do make a model that is 20 amp with 2 edisons on it. (may be 20amp edisions.....).

Highly recommend, While the price isn't cheap, I would consider it beyond fair.
