LAB Shoot Together
« on: October 27, 2008, 12:23:54 PM »

This has been on my back burner for some time, but I'd like to get it going... I know there's plenty of interest, so let's make it happen.

I have plenty of guns to bring, and I'm happy to chip in some dough to rent a significant portion of a range for the day. What I don't have is a good facility to do it in, I'm hoping someone out there does...

If you have or know of a facility that would be willing to have a dozen of us (I guesstimate) rent out a portion of their facilities, let me know. I know there's a good one in DE, but would like some other options. Blue Trail here in CT is OK, but a little restrictive.

Said facility must:
  1. Not be in NY, NJ, or MD due to onerous gun laws
  2. Have staff on hand to enforce safety
  3. Be reasonably accessible to most of the northeast (Virginia is probably too far south for this one, northern VT or NH too far north)
  4. Have a shotgun field, a short range pistol line, and a medium range rifle line
  5. Preferably have a building for meeting up and eating a meal afterwards
  6. Preferably sell targets and ammunition
  7. Be "newbie" friendly. I'd love to have new or inexperienced shooters, but I'm no instructor.
If you've got something close, post here or PM me if you don't want to announce to the LAB that you're a gun owner. I'd like to do more than one of these, but I'd like to fit this one in before it gets too cold. We may have to trim it down and do, say, only shotgun (or something like that) to make it work, and have a more comprehensive one later.

Once we get things moving more, if you'd like to bring some guns please do! However, make sure your guns are legal wherever we're going (for instance, AK-47s are no go in CT, which eliminates that fun piece of hardware).

Ommelandon here in DE is a good one Bennett, There's also Targetmaster just over the line in Pennsylvania. It's all pistol (and maybe small rifle?) though I think, but it's indoor and they have machine gun rental, which could be cool.

What is the problem with Blue Trail? I haven't been there in quite a while, but it seems to meet your requirements from my experience. Lots of firing points at short and long ranges, and shotguns across the street.

They used to host a gun show in October where lots of manufacturers came and you could try out all the guns you wanted. I haven't heard anything about that show lately. I think it is owned by the same Lyman family that makes Lyman reloading gear.

What do all you gun nuts have against real guns?  If I bring an 1863 Springfield rifled musket ( made in Italy, hey what can I say, I'm not rich ) are you gonna let me in ?    How about an M1 Garand ?

My wife shoots in CMP M1 Carbine matches. And NRA hi Power with AR15. I sometimes shoot M1 matches. I enjoy pistols more myself. I get tired of the wife out shooting me in rifles. Laughing

Otherwise it's just my Sig for me, cheaper to shoot!

I have two complaints about Blue Trail, the first being that the closest pistol line is 25 yards, which is about 20 yards further than I normally shoot. Nice to be able to do some longer range target practice, but useless for practical pistol shooting.

Secondly, the range is under some "fire" because neighbors claim they keep having spent rounds end up in their yards. Blue Trail has instituted big safety measures like a much larger berm (which is great), but they've also put plywood across the entire line so it is very difficult to fire above a certain angle. Technically that's great, but it makes is a real pain to shoot standing and gives the whole line a very claustrophobic feel.
