The Right Fixtures...
« on: October 27, 2008, 10:57:01 AM »

Got a question for all you lighting gooroos out there.  The lighting at my church is not the best in the world as you probably could assume.  We had it installed about 4 years ago and the coverage in front of the stage is zero.  I have four lights that can be replaced for a better lighting wash in front of the stage  The only problem is I don't know what the best fixture would be to correct this problem. The 4 current lights I'm looking at replacing is the Opti-Par ETL, definitely the wrong light for the job.  The goal is to end up with a nice wash in front of the stage and a nice wash where the podium is in the picture.

As you can see in the picture, the lights are circled and the space needing lit is a rectangle.  There between 30 and 40 feet of distance at least, btw the lights and the floor needing lit.

Id say a couple of ETC Source 4's.

You dont need anything fancy right? (color changing, gobo's, etc) Just a good wash?

I am not a lighting pro, but I would look up Leko lights.

Good luck.

It looks as though they have 8 leko's hung further forward already. What are those being used for? And what's your budget? There are many different lighting fixtures that would fit the needs in different price ranges. Unlimited budget I'd be putting in some movers with decent zoom.

Ok, I will answer these questions the best I can:

What are the 8 Lekos for?  We use these to light different places on stage for the band.

Budget?  Its pretty limited, probably in the $250 per light range if I had to guess.

I can't remember what lenses we have on the fixtures right now, but I'm pretty sure its either the narrow or very narrow lense.

This advice is great, I will keep making notes.

Why don't you try to just swap the lenses for some medium ones? Lenses are fairly cheap and that could be the simplest solution.

If you're looking for a decent wash, I'm not convinced that the lights you have are the wrong tool for the job.

I'd start be figuring out what beam angle you need (assuming a 16' wide rectangle and a 30' throw, it looks like about 30 degrees is the right angle).  Once you know that, you can determine if you have the proper lenses in your current lights, or if you need to swap lenses.  If swapping lenses and re-aiming the current lights doesn't give you the results you're looking for, then, and only then, would I start looking at new lights.

If you determine that you really do need new lights, I'd take a look at the ETC Source 4 or the Altman Shakespeare (the latter if you are using GLA/GLC, or HPR lamps in your other ERS units) (and if you aren't using GLA/GLC or HPR lamps, you should be).

Sidenote: I just swapped a bunch of 575w HPR lamps into some 2200 series Strand Lekos.  What a HUGE difference!  They look like they did the day the were new, and with less power.  Focus more clearly, and gobos come out cleaner too.
