Your thoughts on the Peavey PVM-480?
« on: October 27, 2008, 02:22:42 AM »

I was at a live auction for an old Catholic church and they were selling the "sound system", old Bogen mixer/amp and those OLD 12" full-range speakers with the wizzer cones. Never mind the garbage. I was able to pick a Peavey PVM-480 out of the pile-o-crap and take it out the door for the grand total of $10. It's in excellent shape and fully working. Does anyone have any thoughts or experience with this mic?

Thanks

They are a pretty decent condenser mic.  Do not even think about putting them on anything that has a bunch of air moving-such as a close miced voice, but for things like overheads, wind instruments, piano, bongo/congo etc they are fine.

I used to have several and never had any issues with them.

IIRC this mic did surprisingly well when they tested choir OH on the churchsoundcheck list some years ago. Since I have not read that list in a long time I don't remember who did the testing or how they did it. Maybe someone else on LAB still subscribes to that list and can give more information

not even worth 0.02 / mats

I've got a pair.  Used them for at least 6-7 years with no problems.  They are plastic though.

They work well on hi-hats. Although, I have had to repair 2 of them now due to Peavey's incredible soldering skillz. Wink

Take care of her and she'll treat you alright.

I use them on overheads with good results. Think of them as an SM94 substitute.

The PVM-480 is an excellent Choir or Pulpit Mic. It is a super-cardioid electret condensor. It also is very fine for Overheads and High Hat.  It is an exceptional microphone for any acoustic instrument.  I just used one in Nigeria on Karen Patterson's Cello (World Class Cellist).

Earlier models were very light weight aluminum (not plastic, but the paint made it appear to be plastic).  Current models are much heavier and more durable.  Contrary to one post, it can be used as a vocal Mic, BUT it must have the windscreen on it, or yes it would then be a disaster.  Since the windscreen is easily lost, I recommend a little rubber cement right under the collar of the windscreen.

Current MSRP  U.S.$'s is $299.99, so the original poster certainly got a great deal.

Old, old ones were brass, then aluminum, now back to brass. Never plastic.

Maybe the aluminum seems like plastic to me. Rolling Eyes
