“In rigging we trust”
« on: August 28, 2008, 12:57:14 PM »

Hi
Ok, its not a 400lb speaker suspended by a shoelace, duct tape or dangling by the speaker cable but it does make one stop and think about rigging.
How “sure” would you have to be to trust this rigging setup and do this job?

Seems and odd way to demolish that stack, wouldn't it collapse straight down on itself with some explosive charges ringed around the base?

Either way, I'd like to see photos of the outriggers around the tractor-trailer around the cab of that crane, hopefully they're 100 yards wide.

Awesome, looks like fun. Knock out the sections between the tripod then get picked up and reset in the knockouts, do it all over again. But if you knock it down on top of the crane, game over. Crying or Very Sad

Yuck.  That's going to take a long time doing it that way.  Hope the operator is not afraid of heights.  That would be a pretty weird feeling going up there.

Hi

I'd like to hear the discussion that lead to that approach.
As much as i like machines, that is one i wouldn't want to try to drive.
I guess with Fred Dibnah having passed away, they couldn't do it the old fashioned way.
Actually his way is kind of scary.

If Fred were working with you, the Matterhorn would have been steam powered Very Happy

His method of controlled demolition is kind of ironic: burning down a smokestack, so to speak.

Thanks for the link... just spent the last 25 min watching Fred.

Have fun, good luck.

Thanks for the Fred Dibnah link.  Finally; I was sure I had seen him somewhere but over the years was beginning to suspect I had merely dreamed the whole thing up (not so unusual, I have very Steampunk-esque dreams).

Looking at that picture I can't help thinking about the Miller Park crane disaster.

I hope they take the windier days off.

Tom,

One crane shot deserves another, though yours is more scary.

Took this picture of two cranes supporting a crane supporting a crane at the ‘95 Truckers fest in Switzerland.

Yeah... I got to drive by that wreck every day.  I'll never doubt the power of wind again.  Heartbreaking at the least.

We used to see jury rigs like that all the time up here in the Boston area when they were pulling down a lot of the old mills. They probably cant knock it down with explosives because the liner may have asbestos in it or some other crap that kills people.
