Not a Subwoofer Ciare 1.38 TW - 1" HORN TWEETER
« on: July 21, 2008, 11:39:33 AM »

Just wondering if anyone here has any experience with the
Ciare 1.38 TW - 1" HORN TWEETER.

It claims 105dB sensitivity usable down to 2.5kHz.  It sounds like a great little tweeter for what I'm playing with right now.

I'm building a little Bass guitar/Keyboard top box with some RCF L8S800's.

At the moment I'm going to throw some old Alnico JBL Bullet tweeters I've had sitting around for almost 15 years into the Box's probably X ing at around 3-3.5kHz.

I'm not crazy about the 40 degree conical, but hey they ain't costing anything.

The Ciare don't post any info about polar.  They look pretty cool for the price.

Any one have any experience with these.  They look like they boast some Hefty SPL capabilities.

Antone,

Can't help you with the Ciare, but you can tame the bullets by putting a 2308 lens in front of them, which are easy to make out of plastic or metal.

The lens knocks off a fair amount of level, but you get about a 80x40 pattern.

Antone,

Ciare HF driver, formerly known as PT380, found its place in many of mine (much) earlier designs, so I know it well.

Second thing (flame suit on) : RCFs L8 S800 is their single best driver they ever made without a shade of doubt. And I mean that in absolute category. Nothing else they make can come even close.

So, components you choose guarantee groovy design.
I'd use 1st and 3rd order crossovers for LF and HF respectively.
Don't be afraid lowering cross point to 2KHz. In combination with carbon eight(s) you'll get cool transition and good overall polar response too.
Ciare's horn is pretty shallow so narrowness of the response will 'kick in' on upper most part of response. IMHO it's not that narrow even there...

You'll need to 'dim' Ciares quite a bunch, probably 10dB or so.
Try to do it in a manner that will not 'hurt' HF transient response...

Hope this helps

Dim it as in simple L pad, or does it need a litte eq assistance?

L-pad should work OK in this situation where quite some dBs must be 'fried'.

Try a simple experiment : shunt series resistor of the L-pad with small-ish poly propylene cap, 330nF or so. Not too big in order not to boost HF response. 'Sparkle' will come back.

Shit, now I sound like a HiFi freak....

Hah hah, I love having that extra sparkle in my sound.  For Bass guitar I don't think extra sparkle should be so big a deal but maybe for keys.  I am intending this cab for more of a modern bass tone, nice crispy slap pop bass.  The more the merrier?

Would something with such a wide dispersion be ok for monitors?
Hmmm 330nF?  Yah I could see that depending on what the total Z of the circuit is.

I guess I can throw in an a multi throw switch variable tweeter attenuation since most commercial bass guitar cabs have that feature.
