West epoxy used properly (including the filler additives) makes an indestructible joint allowing use of butt joints. The downside is it's messy to work with.

PL Premium will work just as well as West epoxy and will allow for butt joints. The wood will break before the joint will come apart, it is super strong. It also is great because it slightly expands to seal off any gaps, making it useful in horn sub building to help reduce chance of those pesky killer air leaks. PL is also much less messy to deal with.
Note, you need PL PREMIUM, not some of the other grades of PL for best effect.
