If you decide to go the 850/trap route you might want to look at the KF650z instead.  It uses the same drivers but doesn't have the horn-loaded 15".  The result is a smaller box with less pattern control at lower frequencies.  The output should be the same.  The "z" version of the KF650 also sounds amazing with the UX8800.  We have them for our smallest rig and love them.  I would also chose them over the Danley for several reasons--more output, rigging, cross-rentals, rider friendly, etc. (even though the Danley is a great sounding box).

The 850's have 2db more output on the lows and highs. Mid output is the same.

I looked at the 650z's, but I didnt see them as a huge upgrade over what I have now.

Evan

Peak Output:

KF650z
134.5 L
141 M
138 H

KF850z
135 L
141 M
141 H

.5 dB on the lows and 3dB on the highs.  You're right, the KF850 will put out more, but I would much rather handle a KF650.  Very Happy   We do use other boxes for our larger gigs though.

Several sound companies in Norway has Nexo Alpha/ Alpha e in their inventory. This is a very good trap box wich normally sound better than KF850's, alltough the latest Gunness processed 850's are catching up.
Anyway, every company I know of that has invested in GeoS12 systems were thinking about offering those side-by-side with the trap systems, but in reality the Alpha systems now are just collecting dust in the warehouse, they are too big, too heavy and more difficult to deploy.

Go with GeoS12 and get some nice rigging hardware, and You'll never look back, this is the system that will make You the $$. The scalability of the GeoS will make them fit almost any bill.

are the Nexo NXAmps available in the USA yet?

http://www.nexo-sa.com/asp/catalogue/products.asp?linkid=0&a mp;prodcode=NXAMP

4 channel amps with a built in processor, either 4 X 1k or 4 X 4K and 2 Ohm stable.....

now that's how to power a Geo (or PS10s or Alphas or.....)

I think Nexo Alpha e is something you should take a serious look at.

http://www.nexo-sa.com/user/images/products/view/Alphaef_painted.jpg

Here's the nutshell per box:

107dB 1W/1m Sensitivity
140dB peak output
40Hz-19kHz
209 lbs.
flyable
stackable

It's also available in a split low/mid-hi version.

Also, these bad boys have been out long enough for some to be available on the used market.

Harry Brill or Randy Frierson might be the guys to talk to about these boxes.

Having looked at the sort of gigs you do I do not think Kf850s are the best idea. They are a very large box and the crew costs will add up. If I was looking at trap boxes I would look at Nexo Alpha or D&B C4, which are both good systems in a smaller package. Round here at least there is a reasonable availability second hand. They can both be flown, I have only seen the alpha flying system which is a bit fiddly but not that bad. It's not as slick as some line array rigging, but it can be groundstacked a whole lot easier than a line array.

Someone has mentioned Alpha E, this does have the advantage of needing less amps as the tops can be run passive but it doesn't sound as good as the full alpha. It's also no cheaper per box. It also might be worth looking at turbo flash as this is what you appear to hire in so there is local hire stock.

Evan if you can get more Turbo flood or flash then I would go for that as there is obviously some nearby to add to your own stock as reqd, I am a big fan of the D&B C systems (c4 or c7) these are becoming quite available now as everyone is buying Q and J systems, the biggest hassle with these things is you must used the correct amp for them either the older p1200 mainframe with the correct processor modules or a D12, IMHO they are better than most compact point source units and are very hard to break if used with their system amps, flying them is quite easy and they stack no problem with 2 people.  Gordon

How about the new EV Phoenix line? Should be good for rock shows.  Might cut you a deal on six EAW KF695i's as our new XLC rig is going up.....

The KF850 and Flashlight weigh about the same.  The Flash is 25

I would also consider that owning and using and fixing an 850 rig will be inexpensive, easy to fix, replace, process. If you go the d&b or NEXO you will probably end up spending too much money, if something goes, which it will, you will not have many options to fix the problem.  Everything will cost more. Like owning an expensive car.

Evan, you mentioned re the lift situation.... if I were you I would get some lifts capable of doing most of your gigs and only rent big lifts for the larger shows.  Renting lifts for every show is a hassle.  Something small like an L16 might work in the interim and if you ever get a bigger lift you can still always use it to fly lighting truss etc.

The Nexo route is more flexible, and in your situation all the weight of KF850's and their amp racks etc is something you will very quickly get sick of lugging around.  Plus the nexo's should sound better....

BUT.... by the time you buy enough Geo S12 boxes plus a set of lifts, you may be out of budget........ maybe you should buy a huge pile of TRX boxes  Laughing  Laughing  Laughing
