I was thinking a scanner might be a lot easier to mount and less expensive.  But I wouldn't go with a DJ-Scan or any ultra low-end scanner.  Those do not move smoothly enough for a spot application, in my opinion.

Depending upon your budget there are any number scanners that would probably work for you. Do not get the DJ Scan! Consider the following fixtures (in no particular order):

ADJ Scan250 Deluxe
ADJ Peformance Scan (similar to Scan250, but has rotating gobos and a separate shutter/dimmer channel)
Chauvet Intimdator 2.0
Martin SCX 600

The above are all halogen lamp fixtures.

ADJ AccuScan
Chauvet Q-Scan250

Both are 250w discharge lamps.

One of the keys to movement can also be the controller. 8-bit motors are not as smooth as 16-bit, but the joysticks on most controllers really suck. If you are using a controller that allows the use of sliders, practice using these. Once you get the hang of it, the "live" response will be much faster and smoother. Of course, YMMV....

We have installed hundreds of moving heads and have always either used aluminum o-clamps or heavy duty c-clamps. Make sure to put a safety cable on fixtures you are hanging, it only takes one bad time to feel the pain from not doing so.

Say I wanted to mount a design spot 250 on top of an 8' tall piece of truss with base plate.  Are there any tricks to getting it up there without a ladder?
