Sold all the Bose Hi FI stuff at retail in the late 70's.  Was good stuff then.  We are  way past it now.  Voice of the Theatre  and Phase Linear was good then too.

Back in the day when Bose 901s were actually a contender, Advent Walnuts powered by Crown DC300s were my favorite, and what I owned.  At the time, I thought Bose 601s were about the best Hi-Fi speaker Bose had ever come up with. But it was the late 70's and I was smoked-up in a college dorm-room, so WTF did I know...

FWIW.

Gene, I remember a similar take when the 901's came out.  The local high dollar store (not high end, there was another guy selling Levinson, Quad, Magnepan and ARC out of a dental office building that I didn't know about at the time) had hung a pair of the Boses opposite a Paragon and over the top of some AMT/Heil boxes.  The 901s sounded better than a small box full of portable record player speakers ought to, but was no match for the other stuff in the room.  A buddy who worked in the service department told me how much power they had to have (this was back when a DC300 or Phase 700 was crazy big) and I thought something must be wrong here.  Then I found the other guy, bought entry level Maggies and never went in the other store again.

Was that in Jenkintown, PA? If it wasn't it is pretty bizzare that 30 some years ago high end audio dealers set up shop in medical buildings....

Na - I'm a Florida boy and it was in Miami.
Not long after that at a place called Mr. Hanks (also in Miami) I heard some EV stuff that was pretty big and bad and I walked out with 2  12" EV SRO's of the coffee can alnico variety for a whopping $60 each!  They suffered Marshall and Fender abuse for years - still work great today.  I was an EV fan from that point on and still think they have some interesting stuff.

No, Honolulu.  Two guys.  Tim Marutani and Chris Hansen.  Tim moved to SF (he had come from DB Audio in Berkley) stayed in the underground install world and Chris went to LA and started a fancy storefront.  I think Chris is still there, don't know what happened to Tim.

Back in those days, TAS was really underground and the shops were kind of deliberately hidden.  Kind of like pro sound now.  You have to know about it, it isn't down at the corner mall.

YES YES & YES - that's the kind of thing that sticks in the ol' pea brain.  Nobody complains about the high price of those early JBL Lascala (sp?) home stereo speakers or those 15" infinite baffle coax Tannoy's because they actually delivered the goods.

Hi Gene-

The La Scala was/is a Klipsch product, from back when Paul W. Klipsch engineered and ran the company.

It's a sad story about how the company fell... greedy family members, outside investors, and the eventual sell-off of the brand name.

Have fun, good luck.

Tim Mc

That's true - I may have jumbled a few names and brands from almost 40 years ago.  We were on a listening jag at the local high dollar stereo store and they had the newfangled BOSE 901's on the little stands http://yesplaza.co.kr/mall/upload/mall/bose901.jpg  and the salesman was really into them but when compared to this JBL Paragon beast (had to research the name and find a pic)  http://www.mcsmk8.com/Paragon/JBL-01.JPG  they got blown away along with every other big bad thing they had.  In a different store I heard the infinite baffle 15" coax Tannoy's and actually liked them better but didn't have a chance to A-B them side by side.  That's what kills the Bose in a real world shootout for pro high output type sound - put them side by side with something else.  Just think what kind of pro rig you could get for the same money as the Bose and there's no comparison.

Gene,
The Paragon, holy tamoly what a cabinet. My brother owned one and the sound was just unreal (so was the cost). In years gone by JBL has always been somewhat of a contender with their lineup. Not so much today, but back then.......

Here's the story behind the Paragon and a number of older JBL boxes including the Cabaret. Remember those??

We use 4 Bose 802's(with 2 bose bass cabs) in a small portion of our club that has tv screens.  We mostly use to use it for audio for the music videos and karaokkee(sp).  For that purpose they preformed fine.  Powered with QSC RMX2450 and using all the Bose processing. But as we have changed gears and put DJs over this rig now it really hurts.  I just cant seem to get the output I want.  And servicing that 802 is a pain in the butt.  The whole cabinet is sealed, and if one driver fails it the rest go out too...then the only way to find it is just start poping them out one by one till you find the dead one. And they give you a whole 2 cm of wire to work with once you get the driver out.  Absolute crap!  Mine will be going on fleabay soon.  People buy that shit up on there.

Remember? How could I forget! Back in the day, my "friendly competitor" across the street had a Paragon on the sales floor, and the sound was nothing short of mesmerizing! My young mind had a hard time wrapping around who the hell could afford one of those (memo to self: how 'bout some of the guys singing on the records we were listening to!), nevermind some of the other practical considerations. It sure beat the pants off my pair of little Altec home-sized Voice of the Theatre
