What's recommended for the first turn of the Labsub?...
« on: January 20, 2008, 01:47:31 PM »

Hello,

Please excuse me if this question has already been asked... I am curious to know what builders have used for the corner half-circular piece between the first and second horn segments inside the Labsub?... I was wondering if it's pre-kerfed MDF, luan (bendy board) or something similar?... I would also like to know the recommended thickness for this piece?... Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated...

I thank you in advance for your comments and/or suggestions...

Kev

Hi Kevin,
After I post this someone will undoubtedly chip in with the proper name for the product that evidently resided in some of the dead brain cells here. It is a tubular concrete mold readily available from a concrete products supplier.  It is basically a heavy, perhaps 3/16"-1/4" thick cardboard sort of material.  A 21 1/2" long piece, cut in thirds length-wise, is sufficient for 3 Labs.

Hello Al and Ivan,

After I posted this question the wife and I went to Lowe's to pick-up some things,...and while we were there I looked at these and wondered if they would work...Surprised  They have a couple different diameters and thicknesses...

What's the best way to fasten this stuff?...

Many thanks!

Construction adhesive on the backside and staples (1/2") to anchor to the wood.

Hi Ivan,

Would you recommend notching the birch so it would pop in place?...

Also gently peal off the outer plastic skin of the Sonotube to allow proper grip of the glue.

This is how I did mine.

Click on Nimrod's link to his PSW profile, and click on "show all posts."

He's taken on a couple of interesting projects and documents them with well written text, drawings, and photos.  Plus he's nice guy, too!

Have fun, good luck.

Because the first to second horn segment (first turn) of my project is fairly close to the compression chamber (2.7:1 compression) I wanted to explore all of the possibilities... I found this company that specializes in cylinder, molded, bendy, and aircraft plywood... http://bd-international.com

Any thoughts?...

Isn't 'your project' a standard Labhorn?  Confused

Even if not, for similar application the Sonotube section is a perfect solution.
It is widely obtainable, already has the exact radius (for the Labhorn, at least), cheap, very strong, easy to fit/fabricate, bonds with your favorite wood glue ...

What more could you ask for...

Hello Nimrod,

Nope,...It's for a design I have been working on for quite some time...Smile I'm in the final design stage and I'm moving forward with the construction of eight cabs... I decided to post my construction questions here as well as speakerplans.com because most of the principles still apply...http://www.teamaai.net/kevin/2cents.gif I like preparing for how things are going together before I arrive at that turning-point (pun intended)...

Thank you for your advice, comments, and suggestions...
