« on: October 25, 2011, 05:41:23 PM »

Looking for recommendations of best laser tapes
Good direct sun
 Works on angles
Works on non reflective surfaces
Own the Home Depot variety,  not so much

I picked up a Bosch GLR225 (I know, Home Depot) that works well outdoors in direct sunlight. I've also found that if you put a piece of reflective tape on your target it works exceptionally well. I've measured over 200' with it outside in daylight.

Thanks for the tip about reflective tape. I bought a Bosch at White Cap and I've had terrible luck at 100'.

The other piece of advice is that a tripod is absolutely necessary to get these things to work at any distance.
cheers,

Good tip on the reflective tape,
Everyday is a different combination of components or bad environment
(eg.. building with very bright Sodium vapor lights ,Those mess with the Stanley bad ),,
or I might be checking distances of a already installed system ,
So having a tool that works in many situations is imperative ,
I have looked around at few different manufactures

Johnson Level
Leica Disto
Northwest Instrument

All in the $150 to $700 range,  I would like to buy the right one the first time ,instead of buying trying it out , returning ,trying another  you get the picture .
Help!

I have a Hilti PD42.  I looked at all the Distos, and I liked that the Hilti was quite a bit smaller than the others.  It has the optical range finder and works pretty well outside, even in fairly bright sunlight.  I got mine at Home Depot for $399, which was a good price as usually they're $499.

I own the "inexpensive" Leica Disto D3 now replaced by the D330) which is not so good outside, although on dark days, late in the day, or early morning, it sometimes is sufficiant.  Generally it has worked out for me because the vast majority of my work is indoors.

However I've tried their higher end models that DO work very well in direct sunlight.  My impression from seeing others using these is that the Leica is pretty much the standard for high end lazor mesurement.

To do what you want to do, I'd consider one of their top of the line models like the Leica DISTO D8 -  $800 however!

For Outdoor use, one should consider a Green Laser

I've used various Leica Distos over the last ten years and am currently using the D3. It does distance, angle, glows in the dark and fits in the pocket. The screen is a bit weak (I cracked my previous one) but a bit of flight case foam glued inside the travel pouch has kept this one safe. Its a red laser beam but then I mainly use it in theatres.

I'm still carrying my Leica, however I've moved up to using from Craftsman their laser inclo! The Leica doesn't like outside much, or dark walls.. But they are built well. I keep wondering about buying another that has the inclio built in, but if it's not broken why fix it?
