Title: Qbox alternative?
Post by: brian frost on September 20, 2012, 01:53:55 PM
I'm looking for what the title states...

My last Qbox was lost/stolen on a show a few months back and I just cant bring myself to spending another $190 on another clunky brick of a Qbox.  Im tired of asking to borrow other tech's on show though.  Is there any other alternative unit available that has similar functions?

I did a forum search and found one other thread where someone was asking the same thing (among a list of other questions), but nobody ever could supply an answer.

Anyone?

Best,
Brian

The earplug2 from http://www.bilkoenterprises.co.uk/ looks nice. I haven't seen or used it though.

Could you bring yourself to spending $100 on a lightly used one?  I'd have to dig, but I know I have one somewhere.

The EarPlug2 is listed at GBP250, which is over $400 at current rates. The RDL box I've seen for about $350. Both make the Q-Box look cheap!! I'm not aware of anything else that's currently available.

This seems like a total LABster DIY project. What off-the-shelf chips/switches/LEDs could we stuff into an old DOD Direct Box case and make useful?

Time for winter projects!

These are awsome

Rob,

Thanks for the link to that manufacturer.

It's not pertinent to this thread, but I know that some people from THIS thread (http://forums.prosoundweb.com/index.php/topic,136735.0.html) were looking for a piece of kit just like this (http://www.ctpsystems.co.uk/micamp.html).

NAB in April may have some neat surprises in this regard.

For now, my favorite of the items listed here is the Earplug because of it's size.  The RDL is too big as is the dBbox.  They both are better audio quality but most of the time connectivity is the most important test and level measurement as well so the tiny speaker is not much of a liability.

Unfortunately the Earplug and dBbox are not available in the US (as far as I can tell), Only from The UK.

Why is my comment not pertinent to this thread? Isnt this about an alterative to a q box? Thats what i was looking for and thats the bit of kit i got. It does everything a qbox does in a similar form factor, also does digital.

Robthebiggerman, Mac didn't say your comment was irrelevant.  Anyone who posts without using their real name is subject to the obligatory correction to do so.  Be the bigger man, and use your real name. Someone will respond to your comment when they're ready.

Has nothing to do with your comment. This forum requires everyone to use their real name, Mr. Thebiggerman.

Rob and others,

First thing: Mac is not the one who made the "not pertinent" comment.  That was me.  Rob, I think you clicked the Quote button on the wrong post…easy to do, no worries.

Secondly, the "not pertinent" comment was pertaining to the threads and links that I referenced in my own post, NOT your input to the Qbox Replacement topic.  Your post is certainly pertinent and I'm sure other posts could use your input, too.

I'm a big fan of my CTP db box. Not least because it does AES as well as analogue, and has a 4-wire box function which comes in handy for flashing through comms lines when im working in that world.

However, I have heard rumours of a new one... I, amongst other things, have requested pink noise generation and XLR cable testing...
