Title: Help Identifying PA Speaker
Post by: Cory Cooper on June 23, 2014, 10:41:04 AM
Hi All,

I know this is a bit off topic, but I figured with all the experience here, someone could probably identify this brand/model of speaker.

Sorry for the low resolution of the photo, I can't get anything higher.

Thanks in advance,

Mackie SA1232s?

Thanks Ray! That was fast.

Using your suggestion, I believe they are actually the Mackie SA1532z.

Thanks again, I appreciate your help.

Yeah, they keep changing models around. Haha. It's been awhile since I've focused on their current models/lineup.

Yeah, they tend to do that periodically. ;)

As an FYI - The reason I was asking is because my brother is in a '70s band in Nashville, and he posted a photo of their setup. I didn't recognize these cabs, but I bet it made for some nice sound.

With a flat-front deployment, I'd have to question "nice sound".

I was really only referring to the cabs, not the deployment. ;)

If you don't mind and have the time, as a learning experience from the photo, what would a better arrangement be? Center/couple the subs together across the front of the stage and couple the two cabs on each side (on stands possibly) together more and toe/angle them into more of a horizontal array?

I am sure he would relay any suggestions to their FOH guys.

Just get rid of two of the tops.  They're not adding any significant SPL while they are detracting from the overall sound quality.  They would be useful if you had to do sound in 180!degrees or greater, but that would likely mean outdoor use.

I'd go dual PA approach. Have one speaker per side just for vocals the other one per side for instruments. Use the subs on the instrument side. Pan the vocals to the left and go to the vocal set. Instruments to the right to the subs and other tops.
I'd take it one step more and go with Aux Fed Subs but that's just me.

I'd be inclined to agree.

Used to have a pair of those speakers and they are really nice sounding kit.

More than you probably want/need to know, but follow this:  http://forums.prosoundweb.com/index.php?topic=150304.msg1378398#msg1378398

Myth #5 discusses what's going on with the speaker deployment and why I said what I did.

The "dual PA" has been discussed a fair bit here at PSW, I'd suggest using the search tool provided and look for posts by Bob Leonard and Dick Rees to start with.  They've done this type of setup and have shared their experience and configurations with the forum.
