Title: Best current WAP/Router for any consoles and Lab Gruppen amps these days
Post by: Jeff Stielau on June 25, 2017, 10:39:01 PM
Didn't see a current / quick answer for this anywhere.

Curious what others are using for the latest/greatest ( not breaking the bank ! ) Router OR wireless access point ( WAP ) for basic iPad control of their consoles  ( Soundcraft Vi1 & family ) in my case.

May even need one for wireless access to the Lake Processors in our Lab Gruppen amps.

Seems the market is flooded with options these days.

Any advise appreciated !

How big is the bank?

Lots of solutions at about $100.

I am building a few hundred dollar system for my festival work.

I use 3:

WRT54GC - compact and portable, sits in the bottom of my bag and with me always. Good for short distances and very convenient. Saved my bacon many times.
WRT54GS - flashed with DD-WRT which among other things, allows me to up the power output to 250mW, so it has great range, but only 2.4G
Ubiquiti NanoStation M5 - 5Ghz long-range AP for more critical and long-distance usage.

Increasing broadcast power only changes half the path.  The return path is often the weakest link in the chain.

Of course. Still get great range though. Certainly better when I upped it's power...

I have one of these older G series Linksys routers....a bit clunky and big.

The Ubiquiti M5 looks small and more current technology.

Is the M5 easy to set up ?    Plug it and search it's specified network , enter password and go ?     Or do you have to configure it first with the Airmax OS software they show on their website?

https://www.ubnt.com/airmax/nanostationm/

Thanks in advance for your help !

I had no end of trouble setting up a Ubiquity M5 Bullet.
Gave up and tossed it.
Bought a used Netgear WNDR3400.
Perfect!

It's easy enough, but for some baffling reason it's not just plug-and-play. Every other router I've used typically you plug in, browse to it's IP, change a password and it just works. The M5 (and other Ubiquiti) are not that way. You power on, browse to it's IP and have to make some changes before it will work. It has no "wizard" like consumer grade stuff does.
Luckily there are people that have posted the required changes on the net that are needed to make them work.
I've no idea why they don't make the default settings the correct ones to make it "just work".

For off the shelf wireless routers I have had excellent results with both a TP Link Archer C7 (about a $100) and a Netgear R7000 (about $150).
I operate both only on 5g.

There are times I feel I get touch more range with the TP link.
I use them with a Allen Heath QU Pac 32.

I love my Linksys WRT1700AC with DD-WRT flashed on it. Working beautifully on QU24 with all band members on QU-You apps, Client-Bridge network to the local wifi for internet, network cables to amps, dsp, speakers, etc.

Plenty of horsepower. Amazon for ~100 warehouse deal.

I got a Ubiquiti Unifi AC Mesh recently and I plan to mount it on a tall mic stand and plug it into one of my Netgear routers with their radios off. Should be good for 400'.

Just went with  the Netgear R700 (AC1900).. It may be called a Nighthawk in some markets.. Much faster than anything else I had so far

So, got things mounted up. I used a top hat and mounted the bracket for the AP and a mic mount for my paddle (for a remote speaker). Now I can easily get both up 10+'.

For a one-nighter gaff tape works fine in my experience. The longer-term temporary solution that I've seen is to use a hose clamp through the AP and around the mic stand.

I was trying to come up with something a bit more elegant that doesn't require a tool. I fabricated a slip bracket that bolts to a top hat, but it's pretty ugly. Tried velcro but that slips down the stand.

Guess I'll take the AP to the big orange store and see what I can find.

I have a couple of pics I can post. Might only get one per post, we shall see.

The top hat and speaker stand (though was sold as lighting stand) are from On Stage Stands - I am a dealer). The stand goes up 13’ but often I don’t put it up that high.

Edit:
Oh, and a few sand bags on the bottom of the stand make it pretty stable.

Edit:
Got one to post. The xlr in the middle is the dmx cable to the Donner transmitter. For that I used a piece of aluminum angle punched for Neutik d and mounted an xlr feed through.

I hope this helps.

This works for me, although I've only started using it, so not sure how well this will hold up over the long haul.  I plan on changing out the 50' Ethernet cable for something shorter.

So for the AC Mesh is that the wall mount bracket screwed to a piece of L aluminum that's bolted to the top hat?

We are using the Engenius ENS500 and ENH500 units with terrific results for console connectivity as well as PLM/Lake connectivity. They are poe (proprietary, injector is included) so only one cable necessary and you can put them on a mic stand (zip ties and LO2 for us). I had some problems with spotty connections using an off the shelf consumer level product, so we spent a little more (~$120 or so) and now have incredible range (not sure what the limit is, haven't ever dropped a connection, but it's more than a football field...). Simple web interface, all of the tools and capability you need.

I have been using this TP Link outdoor 5G AP for the past couple years with great success. If I'm mixing from DL32/Core on iPad, which we do quite often at festivals, I use this on stage mounted in the backline to a tall lighting stand. I've mixed 250 feet out at FOH with no issues.  I chose the lighting stand as it's far smaller, lighter than using up a mic stand and goes taller.  If I'm mixing self provided larger gigs from my M32 at FOH, then I attach to our FOH router facing band so they can reliably adjust ears from their phones.  I have a POE switch and router mounted on a 1U shelf in our stage rack and POE injector mounted in the doghouse at FOH so ready when needed at either position.

Yes.

I also defeated the locking latch to make it easy to remove for safer transit.

I reread the title to the thread.  Curious as to why people think in matters what devices they are connecting to.  IP is IP.

I used a chunk of angle aluminum to get the post mount screwed on and threaded a 1/4-20 hole. I then screwed a bolt down through the hole, set it on the top hat and use a wingnut to hold it. No tools needed.

Indeed, now out of production so get one while you still can.

I'm hoping Netgear will make an AP similar to the old UBNT Bullet form factor to go with their AV M4250 switches. The lineup of panel AP's are all wrong for our purposes.

I am still very happy with the Metal series from Microtik.  The first version of the software was less than optimum, the latest software has a DHCP server in a WAP, removable antenna and a production ready form factor.  I can put together a how to or setup a lunch and learn on the product.

These fit great on a mic stand, excellent range.

Yes but I got another one.  I thought we chatted about it.  I got a Microtik home AP as my Unifi's were old and could not even come close to the new gig connection (I am getting over 500 continuous and usable, good service) anyone it was easy to setup.  So I unpacked the new Metal (I had forgotten I had one and bought this for the backyard),  It worked great out of the box.  I am not messing with the old one.  I have not loaded the new code on, I want to see if it was me.  If I can't get it to work I am going to load the new firmware and see.  I wonder if we just got a bad batch?  I will have some data points as I am snowed in and they postponed the Sat. show so just hanging, playing with this and trying some new recipes.

Where did you hear this? Ubiquiti has been having some supply chain issues (surprise, surprise), and availability has been pretty spotty for a lot of their products for...a while, but I hadn't heard of any significant EOL-ing because of it (yet, at least)?

I've been using Metals successfully for years.  A friend asked me to set theirs up.  After multiple attempts I haven't had any luck, even after importing a working configuration from another Metal.  Could be from the same batch as yours.

...and now that you mention it, none of the UAP-ACs are showing up on the main ui.com website anymore, either. Sorry!

I guess now I have to decide if I'd rather stock up on a discontinued product or follow Scott Holzman down the rabbit hole of finding an alternative. Hrm.

I know you responded but we never got into details.  I'm wondering about a defective device because I'm pretty sure I did the hardware reset more than once, should have made it a default AP but I don't think I ever got *data* across the connection.  And IIRC, I was only able to connect to the AP once.  Might be time to do a full hardware reset again and approach with a fresh mind.

And if I can't get it to work, I'll bin it and move on with my Wifi life... ;)

I would be happy to remote in too with you.

The keys of making it work:

Wizard - AP mode
Security profile config and selected
Bridge with the Ethernet port and the wireless modem in the bridge group

That's it

Is there a secret button somewhere to turn on the ifi on the unit?

Welcome to my (former) world, Helge.  I need to find the box I stuffed it in and see if I can make it work.

I recall that the SSID was visible (it showed up as MikroTik) and at least one of my laptops connected to the AP but I was never successful in getting data between devices.

These things get used every day, all over the world.  Either we're really stupid and all the IT professionals here are stumped chumps, the equipment is defective, or.... ah the hell with it...

I tried a lot of things, including bridge.
At one point I saw the network «Mikrotik» from my phone for a few seconds, but then it dissapeared never to be seen again.

I’ll admit that I’m not even close to be a «wifi expert», OTOH I’ve never worked with a wifi unit where I couldn't get some kind of network visible.

I’m leaning towards the idea that this is a faulty unit or there is something here I don’t understand and need to learn.

BTW, the metal has a wifi status LED judging by the markings on the unit.
Haven’t seen a light there, haven’t found a manual where the LED status is explained 🤷‍♂️

Remember that these devices default to the proprietary point to point, they are meant meant for WISP providers.  Go into the radio interface and make sure it is set to 802.11 and not the proprietary protocol.

When you start the wizard you need to select AP mode.

When in the bridge, which is a virtual switch you need to put the ethernet port and the wireless radio on the same bridge.

Ok, I need to fire it up again and have a second look.

Ok, I'm getting something here.
Plugged the Metal into my home network. Did a reset without loading any configuration from winbox, loaded Home AP configuration after reboot, set it to automatic address aquisition, turned on bridge, DHCP and gave it a DHCP range.
Now it works. My second computer can connect by Wifi, get's a IP and can connect to the internet.
The big question is, will this work if I plug it into a production network with automatic addressing?
I have a Dante network running with automatic addressing, I'm intending to use the Metal for remote access for Lake controller and such.

No but you can change the interface from DHCP client to static and put your own IP in.  You can also turn the DHCP server on if you want it to hand out IP addresses.  Don't forget the DHCP service needs to be bound to the bridge interface.

Sounds reasonable :)
How do I bound the DHCP to the bridge interface?
If I understand this correctly, the DHCP will hand out adresses for both LAN units and Wifi units with this method?

Edit: Looks like it works when I add both ports to the bridge and set them to trusted :)

Edit 2: How do I set the DHCP range to start at a higher range than x.x.x.1?
I wish to keep the DHCP from distributing addresses below 100 in case someone plugs a d:live into the network...

Go to IP/Services/DHCP servers and change the scope to whatever you like.

The bridge  is a layer two device, so you have an Ethernet and a Wifi interface, you will receive DHCP broadcast messages from wither interface attached to the bridge.

I found the scope, but there was no logical way to set a range that's not defined by the subnet mask.

You can't serve a DHCP range to a network that the device doesn't have an interface to (or a route).

You are trying to serve a subnet outside the range assigned to the IP interface (you can create more)?

Let me explain what I ran into :)

I added the DHCP to the bridge and added both ports (wifi/cable) to the bridge.
Both sides get ip address from the DHCP server in the same range and can talk to each other. I can successfully ping fron a wifi device to a cable device and back again.
But, I can't find a way to define how to set ip address range on the DHCP that's not defined by the subnet mask.
The default setting is 192.168.1.0/24, that gives me all the addresses from 1-254.
I can modify it by setting various breakers, for example /26 wich gives me another range.

But, I haven't found a way to say I want the adresses 192.168.1.101-192.168.1.254 as the DHCP range.
I can live with using the whole range as it is, but I'd like to keep it above 101 because at some point someone with a d:live will show up and connect to the network, and that can lead to interesting things happening to my network.. (been there, got the t-shirt).

I am sure there is a way to do that, let me take a look.  I will take the router with me, I have a bunch of down time on a trip.

thx

i know this thread is old but just saw it,
and maybe you have found the solution , still i will chime in
you can define your DHCP range on the device who is actually providing the DHCP pool
do you have 1 or 2 devices ( router, access point ) or just one box who do the Access point and the DHCP work.
anyway, i just scroll back and looks like you have a mikrotik device as i read winbox
if you do , it is very simple to do what you want

by defualt mikrotik use  192.168.88.1, but looks lke you changed it to 192.168.1.x  so
you need to do this

1. Navigate to the Router Admin page at 192.168.88.1 (Depending on your LAN Setup) in your case maybe 192.168.1.1 ( or wathever IP you have assigned to your bridge )

2. Login with the provided username and password.

3. Click “Webfig” in the top-right hand corner.

4. Navigate to IP > Pool

5. Click on the Default Subnet to modify it.

6. In the addresses field, modify the range to suit (EG: 192.168.1.101-192.168.1.254)  -->i used those numbers as that is what you said you like to use in your example

7. Click Apply, then OK to save your changes.

so below 101 is for static, any other device that have DHCP enabled will get assigned an IP from 101 and up

i suggest that you assign STATIC ip's to all your devices, mixers, amps, etc
the only ones who will get DHCP will be the tablets , ipdas and or PC;s who connect to the WIFI and who are running the mixing app to control the board
and or fine tune the amps, processors, etc.

Altough i do not use mikrotik for live sound ( i use TP-LINK ) i use mikrotik at the office
as that is what the company uses
Best.

Hello,

Can somebody help with the details instructions on how to setup an Ubiquiti Edgerouter X and Unifi AC Mesh.  I need it to connect to m32's, X32's, DL32R's, etc

Thanks in advanced.

Hi Oscar-

You can't use wireless TCP/IP gear to connect the DL32 or other AES50 devices.  AES50 is not a 'route-able' protocol.  You CAN use wireless to connect the consoles to a remote control device like a laptop, iThing or Android tablet/phone.
