HDMI and several other interfaces use an an encryption know has High-bandwidth digital content protection (HDCP). It's been likened to DRM (digital rights management) and it purpose is basically to prevent unlicensed equipment from entering the marketplace. There are converters made which will enable you to connect HDMI to some other types of connection, but they won't work unless they can unencrypt the signal.

Only on items capable of playing back DRM protected mediums. Cameras and some other sources will not have HDCP on the HDMI signal.
