Title: Another day another dollar...
Post by: Mac Kerr on February 03, 2013, 02:37:05 PM
I'm now on my 4th corporate event of the year, 3 at a week each, 1 at 2 days. We are in the middle of our second day of load in for a beer meeting in Phoenix AZ. It took a while to get 120 motors up, and the house light trusses are being loaded now. Sound is sitting around right now, so I thought I'd put up some pics from yesterday.

Looking at your pics makes me miss my old profession a little.  The waiter trays under the riser legs.  His and hers dueling Instant Replays.  Still another hideously ugly hotel carpet.

But then I remember the aching knees and back.  And the mind-numbing rehearsals.  And the midnight room service (since that's when you get to go back to your room).  And I realize I don't have it so bad after all.

I do envy working on that desk you have there though.  That is one sweet piece o' gear....

All that for a dollar a day-somebody is getting a GREAT deal!

Don't worry-your time will come to work.

Remember that dollar a day is 59 cents after taxes  ;)

And as someone else has pointed out ANOTHER hideous hotel ballroom carpet.

That's a very impressive event. :)

Following the news here we get the impression that the US economy is down, leading to "unecessary stuff" being slashed from purchase lists.

I suppose beer still sells well in a recession!

Impressive Mac, I could have soooo much fun screwing that rig up. One thing that stands out are the clearly marked EXITs, nice to see that for a change.

Whose the #4 on the cases?

Whose the #4 on the cases?
Could be "4Productions"…based out of Boston, I think.  We had them in a few days ago - nice bunch of people to talk shop with.

Look like rentals from 4Wall.

I too like the dueling Instant Replays.

Voice overs on one, walk up music on the other so you can overlap them since the IR will only play one thing at a time.

Least that's what I always did....

Another reason why my computers run rings around IRs.  ;D ;D ;D

I don't get to see the outdoors much, but the having just flown from Phoenix to Vancouver, the scenery has improved outside my hotel window.

Nice jacket, but I'd go with a black dress shirt and a medium gray tie........

I like the way the L+R Imag screens are colour coded as port and starboard, is that pretty universal or more of an individual preference for different companies?
Cheers,
David.

How do you like the Studer Mac?

How do you like the Studer Mac?

Pretty sweet. There are not a lot of them around though, and they are pretty expensive. I used it here because it was an unknown cable run to FOH and the Studer is all fiber. It turned out to only be 100m, but it was a lot easier to run 100m of fiber than that length of 56pr. We also ran a 12pr analog snake for comm and utility. The 12pr was digital capable.

I don't think there is a standard for color coding multiple screens. Our Pandora operator picked the colors and idents.

That doesn't look anything like Vancouver, and I've lived (near t)here for 13 years.

Oh wait, that's the imposter Vancouver to the north. This one in Washington State is still the original and best.  8)

Why all the inverted motors?

Why all the inverted motors?

What do you mean?  This is the standard configuration for entertainment motors (as opposed to commercial use).  It allows the chain only to be hoisted into the air and connected.  Standard is for the motor to be in a case, chain fully extended, thus allowing the chain to be pulled out and connected overhead to the pick.  The motor is then used to lift itself out of the case and hang in place waiting for it's load.
I'd hate to have to lift each motor to hang it.

We just had the 2nd national tour of Jersey Boys in our PAC.  Of the pre-rig points, most were "inverted" using the typical commercial orientation.  They had a pair of A-frame winches we hoisted to the grid to raise those hoists.  On the out they had pairs of riggers let the hoists in on ropes.

Wow...I have not run into the commercial orientation on shows very often.  It's a huge PITA!

i'm going to go with having NEVER seen it.

actually, we did do a show once in a ferrari dealership that had motors already installed overhead.  i can't remember if we actually used them or not, but i remember thinking they looked weird to me and then thinking that was ironic....

Why all the inverted motors?

Some of the motors were for scenic elements where the motor right above the piece would be unsightly. Most of them were "motor down".

On the small screen (couldn't be my aging eyes) I didn't see any that were motor up.  I went back and looked more closely.  Yep, I see them now.

yes I know the standard entertainment use...I'm referring to the two clearly inverted motors (chain down) to the right of FOH....there also appear to be a few in the background as well, hence my question.

mac: ahh, scenic...makes sense, those guys always want to do stuff backwards! :)

Yep, already blamed my small screen on my iPad (since it can't be my aging eyes)  ;-)

We've finished stops 1 & 2 of the 4 city tour of cell phone training. Vancouver and Montreal were both great cities to work in, and eat in. Next week is San Fransisco, then Chicago. Good food tour.

Vancouver was fine with 3 UPA-1Ps for PA, 2 sides on sticks, and a flown center fill. Montreal got 8 dv-DOSC per side and 2 UPA-1Ps for delays.

Vancouver was rainy and Montreal was freezing cold. I guess that is normal. At least they don't close the airport in Montreal if it snows.

This is how we have the motors for our main house arrays installed. Motors dead hung from the steel with the chain pulling the arrays up and then letting them down. It's a huge PITA because we have to climb up on top of our flying bridge to connect and disconnect the arrays from the giant deck chains that hold them when we are not moving them.
