Title: Equipment Overview Video
Post by: Vince Gibbs on September 05, 2011, 04:28:53 AM
Several months ago, a guy posted a video link in here to a video he made showing prospective clients his pa rig.  I thought it was a good idea and told myself I was gonna try and make a simillar video one day.  Since I was carpeting my trailer and had to move all the gear inside, I figured I'd take that opportunity to make a video.  So here it is:

That was a lot of work.  Mostly because I hate speaking on camera.  I just never feel comfortable doing that and I freeze up the moment the record button is pressed.  Oh well, after a million takes, this is what I ended up with.  It is what it is.

Nice video, and some fun gear! My favorite part was where you were showing off the subs, and you got down with the gangsta-squat.  ;)

My only issue is that if I made a video, it would be obsolete within a few months; and its not a simple procedure to update a video with new gear.

LOL!!! Thanks!  Yeah, this was a first attempt at something like this.  I am pretty sure I'll be making more as my gear improves and also some videos showing my gear in action at real live shows.

Couple things to think of for your next video.
Wear a lapel mic to get a tighter less room sounding audio.

Unless your outside you need to use some lighting to make the shots really jump out. Even getting some of the quartz work style lights would be a big help. You don't need to just blast the light directly at what your shooting but try some bounce from a ceiling or from a white piece of foam core board. Actually if shooting outside try some bounce with the foam core to help even out shadows.

Even the smallest consumer video cameras today can shot some good looking video adding some lighting will make the video stand out from the rest.

  Hello,

   Not trying to be critical...

If you are trying to use this video as a sales tool to attract new customers ...

What is your intended customer base?
Do you have existing customers now?
Do you ever rent gear from other Sound Co.s to augment your current gear?
Do you think that this video could limit you as to what types of customers and gigs you can sign?
Do you plan to grow the Company and it's stock of equipment?
Do you have a Business plan?
Do you have a Business mentor?
Someone that has Business operating and growth experience?

Hi Mike,
I agree about the lighting. Especially in the first scene talking about the main speakers. I had a lamp pointed at me, but I do see that it clearly wasn't enough lighting. Thanks!

Hello Charlie, here are the answers to your questions:

Quote
What is your intended customer base?
The same kinds of customers I currently have.  Mostly bands, but also anyone else who needs a pa system for a public or private event.

Quote
Do you have existing customers now?
Absolutely.  This is my full time job and it pays all my bills very nicely. Also, this video was put together more for fun and show than anything else.  I really don't need more customers and I am not relying on this video to get me some.  I know I will make more videos showing my services in the future.  This was just my first attempt.

Do you ever rent gear from other Sound Co.s to augment your current gear?
Nope, never.  So far, I haven't needed to in order to fulfill the types of jobs I get.

Quote
Do you think that this video could limit you as to what types of customers and gigs you can sign?
Maybe.  I don't know yet.  What I do know is that this video does show what I have to offer in terms of gear.  What it doesn't show is all the satisfied customers I currently have and my abilities as a live sound engineer.  Working on that.

Do you plan to grow the Company and it's stock of equipment?
No.  I have almost too much business already.  I turn down more jobs than I currently take and I plan to keep it as a one man operation.

Quote
Do you have a Business plan?
No.  I don't need one.  I am in business now and business is good.

Quote
Do you have a Business mentor?
Other than my CPA, not really.  He's all I need though, imo.  He takes my quarterly tax payments and files my taxes for me.  That's all I need help with right now.

Quote
Someone that has Business operating and growth experience?
I don't want to grow.  I want this to remain a one man show.  I do upgrade all the time and I will continue to upgrade in the future, but I do not want this company to grow into anything bigger.  At one time I thought I did, but after really thinking it all over and what would be involved, I decided I didn't want that.  I am very happy with what I am doing now.  I don't know if I would be as happy if I grew this company into something bigger where I had to manage employees and store several more systems.  Nope, not for me.  I'll pass.

Hey Vince -  Can't watch the video now!

BTW I went to your web site and like what you're doing there. I'm a small time, single operator myself. I'm currently in hobby mode but want to step up to where you are. I'm hoping to be able to watch your video!

Yup.

Likely due to any musical content in the background.
