Basically, replace a USB cable with a wireless connection that would not require a computer at the amp or processor side of the link and allow a laptop connected to a WAP to control.
Is this possible with a USB to LAN adapter and some kind of WAP?
Any suggestions or ideas?

Here's one:

I can use this USB PS2 device to connect to the USB port of the device under control (say a QSC amp with DSP) and that will connect to a WAP (locally) via CAT cable.
I can then connect my laptop to the WAP via WiFi and control the amp with the QSC software.

Exactly. The USB server comes with software to mount the USB ports (over whatever network you have) as if they were local to the computer. I had that same box a few years ago when I needed to do USB remote control of a speaker DSP.

I imagine if I wanted more than 1 device under control, a regular USB hub would not work and I would need the 4 port device in your first response.You can use hub, but most will run at 1.1 spec and not 2.0 on hub mode. You are also limited by the fast ethernet bandwitdh but for configuration I think 1.1 will do. Most also doesn't support more than 7 devices due to 1.1 limitation on hub mode. Cmiiw though

A more flexible solution would be virtualhere. This is a range of solutions, some of which involve buying inexpensive network devices such as a TPLink travel access point, and then flashing them with their custom firmware to make them in to a usb over IP converter. The one I’ve bought has the added benefit of either offering you an RJ45 to connect to your network (what I do) or (as it’s an access pointvalready), just connecting to it directly by WiFi.
A good product and I believe for a single device it’s free too.
