Title: Need help for lighting fixture for stage of small theater-in-the round
Post by: quan.dangle on May 10, 2014, 06:22:37 AM
I plan for a small theater-in-the-round 300m2, ceiling height is 5m. Stage is in the center, 4x5m. The program is for for vocal and instrument, mostly for jazz and tradition songs. Instruments is including piano, drum jazz, saxophone, guitar, violon and vocalist.

I plan to use 8 nos of led par 54x3w (red, green, blue) and a controller DMX 192 pro. The truss is rectangular, 1m distant from the edge of stage. I would like to ask some advices regarding lighting fixture for stage:
- The number of led par is enough, for all instrument and vocalist? Will I need some other type of fixtures?
- The truss needed to be rectangular or only at 2 sides of stage. The distance and the height of truss from the stage?
- A choice of better controller?

Any help would be highly appreciate.

At minimum 2, one from each side, and 3 if you want to do it well.  4 to do it correctly.

If I was washing a 4m x 5m stage with truss as you describe, I would want at least one par every meter all the way around the truss. 18 I think.   This still wouldn't really be enough to do it right.   Given the relationship of the truss to the stage, I would try to do a near and a far shot which would result in 36 pars.  Do you have a link to the led pars?  Cheap ones don't make a good white and look bad on faces.

I am from Vietnam, here is the link:

or

Oop, so big number of led par for a small stage. Is it necessary? How far from edge of stage to the near shot and far shot? I think led par can not do the job of good white color. How about using other type of lighting fixture?

The difficulty here is that expectations vary widely. What may be too much for one person would be barely adequate for another.

General lighting theory is that you want to light each position with 3 lights - front left, front right, and rear.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-point_lighting

Whether that is too much for your needs or two little depends on your expectations.

As to white color - same thing. If you want warm white, it is likely more economical to do that with conventional fixtures rather than LED. Some LEDs can do it fairly well, at a cost.

Hi, The problem that I foresee is using LED lights that have 54/3watt LEDs.  I have 12 of these and they are barely bright enough to back light a 4 meter stage.  We have moved to the much brighter 7 X 10 watt quad RGBW led lights.  Generally speaking on a 4 meter stage we use 6 of them for a front truss and 6 of them for a back truss.  We use the 54/3 watt LEDs for side truss two of them every meter and a half.  That setup does a very nice job of lighting the stage.

Hope this helps.

Bill

Thank you all for your great helps. So I have a plan like this. I will have 12 nos of led par for the near shot and 12 nos for the far shot with the mainly basis 3-point light. I do not know the function of the far shot compared to the near shot and how to use.

I do not know what kind of conventional fixtures should I use and how to combine with led pars

Now I am confused with lighting fixture cause' I am too new to lighting and have no experience. I have already asked from some suppliers from my country but not yet got enough answer.

Anyone help me to decide what type of fixture to come with abobe mentioned led par for the better white colour with the following links:
