A $1000 windfall burning a hole in your pocket to spend on yourself.
If you're a guitar player would you spend it on guitar stuff, or sound equipment. And what would you buy?

Gold...

Come on knuckleheads, at least give me something to think about.

Apparently Behringer X32s are all the rage. Wait a month and the X13 will be out for $999, I expect.

+1
I would rather let it sit and earn me a little and get something nicer when I save some more.
-
Gold...
With gold prices sitting at near record highs, now is the time to sell, not buy.
Back to Bob, how about one of these bad boys?

It's one of the best guitar delays on the Earth, and you'd have about half of your scatch left over.

Buying a collectible guitar or amp, is not crazy and a more fun way to hedge against inflation. Some modest amount of gold is insurance against wild currency valuation swings.

If it really is a windfall I would basically blow it. Not justifications about future value here.
While I usually have a short list of things to buy, I would use a windfall to change my day to day routine. $1000 sounds about right for a long weekend getaway. Personally I would fly to Florida for a couple days of flyfishing.
Cut out the flight and $1000 can really go a long way. Get a nice hotel in the city. Spend the days in museums. Eat in nice restaurants. Go to shows at night.

If we're talking investments, energy stocks seem to be a safe (and lucrative) choice these days. They've consistently been the strongest perfomers in my portfolio.

While out of favor with some, energy will always be in demand. Contrary to disincentives we are on the verge of energy surpluses thanks to fraking, and use of advanced technology like horizontal drilling and improved mapping of reserves. We are just getting our oil pipelines sorted to get oil down to the gulf region so it can be refined (and lots of refined product exported). Natural gas is still in the early days and infrastructure to get it from where we found it, to where we can use it effectively is still challenged. We are still flaring off (burning) way too much NG we could be using with more extensive pipelines. For the global warming concerned, we have reduced our global warming footprint far more from using NG in place of coal, because it is cheaper.. than other country's regulatory approaches.
I have a stock position in Exxon as a combination play on oil profits now, and NG profits later. I have already sold off about half of my home builder stocks since they have already bounced (I bought them a few years ago).
One investment play that is still early is payroll services like ADP and Paychex. In good times they profit from the carry interest on the float from small company payrolls, and increasing employment numbers, if/when that recovery finally happens. They are one of the beneficiaries of increasing interest rates (along with CC companies), so out of favor now, but someday, hopefully in my lifetime, interest rates and employment will go back up.
Using the philosophy of buy low and sell high.. now might be a time to sell oil and buy ADP/PAYX, while energy will stay high for a very long time, and the employment recovery is still a long ways off, so own both (I do).
Gold is just a safety hedge for a small percentage of any portfolio JIC the wheels fall completely off our economy, not a trade or investment, and arguably expensive right now.

Not a chance in hell Tom, but thanks for the suggestion.

I have a pair of AD-9 delays already. Thanks for the suggestion.

In at least half seriousness, how about my XV-5080? You mentioned interest in the past. I'm cleaning house this year and it needs to go.

You're a hard guy to shop for, Bob.

Now we're headed in the right direction. I have plenty of amps and enough guitars, but maybe something light with P-90s like an SG special. Or maybe a pair of monitor if I can find some cheap enough.

I bought a 5080 6 months ago Tom. I also have a 3080. do you have any expansion modules?

Never thought of the marketplace. Be back soon.

How about some sweet hand-wound pickups?

OK, here's Ned's guide to spend Bob's money:
6G15 Fender Reverb - let's say $600 used
Voodoo Lab Amp Selector - nothing more fun than running FOUR of Bob's amps on at the same time...
http://voodoolab.com/ampselector.htm - $230
NOS RCA 6V6GTY, Military spec, matched Pair, $165
https://www.kcanostubes.com/content/nos-rca-6v6gty-black-plates-matched-pair
$5 left.
Speaking of spending money, here's a shop near me I'm afraid to ever get close to -- some of their stuff looks like they raided the corporate PR photographs from the archives...

My 5080 apparently has the JV-80-08 Keys of the '60s & '70's, JV-80-1 Pop, and JV-80-15 SFX. I think I have a Techno board laying around here, maybe in my XP-80. I know that's your kind of thing.
My 5080 also has 128MB of RAM in it.
-
I have 3 of those modules already Tom.
Ned,
No to the reverb, maybe to the switch, no to the tubes, and kill me to the guitar shop.
I did find a 66 dual Showman with cabinet for 1K locally. Hmmmmmm....
-
My money is on Blackberry, spent it this morning.

Wait till the x32 Rack comes out and put the money together with what I could get selling my bands analog board and buy the x32. I imagine I could mix pretty good with my iPad + my laptop. Later I'd get the biggest touch screen desktop I could find and mix with that.
Or.... I could get a larger, nicer analog board(used) , some more rack gear(4chs of gates, another effects processor, and several channels of geq), and a bigger snake.
For ease of setup option 1 for ease and enjoyment of mixing option 2. ;-)

I'm not a "prepper" or anything, but if I were a guitar player, I might spend it on car/truck parts before the apocalypse hits, especially if my vehicle had over 100,000 miles. Now's a better time than ever to preemptively/indiscriminately replace parts before they "get" you later on: engine filter, mass air flow sensor, PCV valve, oxygen sensors (both upstream and downstream), EGR valve, spark plugs & wiring, coil pack, speed sensors (input and output), solenoid pack, transmission rebuild kit, tensioner, serpentine belt, fuel pump, etc, etc. ;D

Snare drums... But thats just me.
I like the vintage guitar idea!

2013 Explorer with 8K miles and toasty heated leather seats. Good idea though.

I just browsed some at ebay and for that money you could buy:
Accordian
Banjo
Bagpipes and a
Glockenspiel.
Silly me, I didn't even know that a glockenspiel was a musical instrument, I thought it was the term for people bragging about their handguns.

If I was going to use it in an investing/money saving way, a grand would make a nice extra principle payment on the mortgage. If I was in a fun mood, I'd be thinking long weekend somewhere where there's good food, good wine, and an indoor headed pool. Right now I'm thinking long weekend. 8)

I love the idea, but the uncovered DIP switches seem out of place for something that will be on the floor on stage, in a bar... very cool though. Steve have you tried it?
I think $1k for a Dual Showman with cab is a no brainer.

The dip switches are how you select what loops are on, but I can see how they could get him.
My favorite feature is the volume control on each loop so you can volume match the loops.
That is a HUGE feature on a loop switcher.

I think Bob's Fender affection ends around 1975 or so... this is from the mid-80's or later, and while nice, probably couldn't hold a candle to his Super Reverbs.
-

This is the correct answer. :)

True. You can usually pick up these Concert Reverbs for about $5-600 in good shape. Now a plain Concert in brown tolex might be nice. The Concert preceeded the Super and is in effect actually a Super Reverb without reverb. You can usually find those for $8-1200. Not really my cup of tea because they don't have reverb.
I'm thinking I may hold out for....
A. Gibson SG Special
B. Gibson Les Paul Special
C. Set the money aside and build my war chest for a nice digital board not named Presonus or Behringer or LS9.
D. A very nice work box with plenty of drawers.
E. Drink heavily for about a week.
PS - I like Steve Hurts idea but I only run 5 pedals, and besides, he sent me a switch if I ever get around to fixing it.
