Title: Guess the Audio Source!
Post by: Ned Ward on November 21, 2012, 01:55:49 PM
Took this last night with my iPhone using audio Kit. The FFT is good, but wish there were some kind of vertical axis markings.

Happy turkey day!

I'll post the actual sound source (recorded from an iPhone, so don't get too excited) on Friday.

I wish -- that would make a fun bass amp for our band! But no, not an SVT or other bass amp.

Something Evan mixed...

I don't think iPhones would survive to measure Evan's show's lows...

The show I did stacks and racks with him last week-he was setting off car alarms across the street-with the OPENING band.  He mixed 3 of the 4 bands.

We were on the 2nd floor-so not much transferring directly to the ground.

He's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Cheers,
Tim

Ship's hold, picking up the engine rumble...

Or a locomotive perhaps, in the cab.

Best regards,

Link to the sound source is here - will need to re-record tomorrow as i inadvertently left the "mastering" HPF on from a past band rehearsal, which is why the low end isn't matching up with what I saw on Audio Kit...

Not that this will come as a shock, but perhaps AudioKit is not the most accurate FFT when it comes to low end. Here's the Waves frequency analyzer screenshot from the file I took yesterday, without mastering HPF on - not much different. It certainly feels lower, and sounds great, but not sure I'm getting that low (at all). May try again today with my Zoom H2 just for fun.

Has anyone found a RTA/FFT that seems more accurate given the built-in mic? This is just for fun, so I'm not using it for mission-critical gigs.

And changing the RTA would change the response of the mic how?

Riley - I think you misread my post.

I'm not looking to change the mic response of my 4S; just trying to find an app that more accurately depicts what it's measuring. From my experiment, Audio Kit's FFT is lacking accuracy, especially on the low end. If there's a better app given the hardware limitations of an iPhone 4s, by all means let me know.

Saw this video of one of the bands - I had to comment on the quality of the sound which I though was a desk feed. But I was wrong - it was the PA sound via the camera! Well done to Danley (and Evan)!

Trevor - that video is great - super clear sound, and the camera shaking from all the bass. Perfect!

OK, so I recorded again with my Zoom H2, set to 16/96 (was going for 24/96, but missed a setting. It was pre-coffee early).

This time, the PAZ frequency tells a different story, and not surprisingly, the zoom H2 is better at recording audio sources than an iPhone. Hopefully this isn't shocking news.

Sending to the iPhone app makers, as while the iPhone can't record under 100Hz, wondering if it's inferring FFT from overtones, etc. But, it did pick up the same 47Hz bump that's in the audio.

Thanks and enjoy.
