You won't believe what I found over on the FOH forums:
http://micstands.com/steeringwheelbase.htm

I might just get one for amusement and put in the lobby for concerts.

Thanks for the info, guys. And while everyone is entitled to their own opinion whether these stands should be used on a professional stage, the truth is that they are being used by the biggest stars. It's not my fault Razz

And regarding the comment that this thread was answered a few days ago, my first thread was deleted because I put my last initial instead of my full last name, so I apologize.

Hercules stands makes a clutch based mic like that, that i felt was pretty indesctrutable compared to the Ultimate stand.

And the clutch is adjustable.  I have 3 and dig them.

I can't see a mic stand in this picture either!

Seriously, I don't see why you would use such a base other than looks. Their expensive and would be hard to store.

RZ...

I think one of the underlying issues is that this type of stand base substitution is less stable than a tripod or a weighted base.  I assume that the weighted base is swapped out for the lightweight base 'cause it's easier for a diva to drag around stage.  The downside of the reduction in stability just may be that the incidence of mic damage from the stand tipping over may increase.  Not to mention the inconvenience of the big noise they make when they hit the floor from 5 or 6 feet in the air.

The adjustable grips are available on several lines of stands.

Dunno the name of the pictured diva, but I would imagine that wireless mics on a tour of that size fall into the "consumables" category.

I don't see the point of the adjust-o-grips.  Making things easy to adjust on stage is not necessarily productive.  Musos on stage will just fiddle with it and make a mess of things, requiring a tech intervention at an inopportune moment.  In my opinion these things are only good for lounge acts who carry their own speaker-on-a-stick production and mix from on stage with a powered head.

They work great for our church's worship band where you have different singers using the mics from one session to the next. Most people can adjust these a lot easier and quicker than the "normal" clutch, and the adjusting is all done prior to the start of service - so no loud thumps in the PA when the top part of the stand accidentally slides all the way down in the tube.
