Carvin TRX System
« on: October 27, 2007, 01:01:18 AM »

I'm in the process of purchasing my first sound reinforcement system. I've searched all over and I know that names like JBL, QSC, Crown, etc. are great brands. I'd like your opinion on CARVIN. I've scoped out (on line) the Carvin TRX system and it looks pretty good as well as the pricing. I know I don't want to get laughed at when I show up to my first gig, but the price is right (so to speak). I'd like to get your thougts on Carvin as a whole and the TRX System...is it worth it?

Thank you!

Rico,

If you're going to be spending tens of thousands of dollars on a sound system (ignoring the question of why you'd get into this hyper competitive market at the low end without enough brand knowledge to begin with) it pays to go and hear any speaker you may be considering. If you are evaluating the Carvin system only on price, you're missing out on the whole picture. It's not how much it costs you, it's how much you can charge for it.

My advice: If you want to do live sound, go see if any local shops are hiring. This isn't something you want to just jump into unless you've got cash you don't know what to do with and are looking for a new hobby you can learn as you go.

I believe Evan owned a couple of TRX tops at one point. You might want to contact him for his thoughts. After all, there's a reason why he sold them.

He blew them up, that's why.

No. I tried triamping them and they still just sucked.

I actually got a chance to hear these first hand...they really aren't that bad. They are a really good looking $600 sounding box. It pretty much sounds like the run of the mill 2 way speaker (didn't have the sound i've come to associate with a great 3 way speaker).

They aren't HORRIBLE though, i'd choose them over some of the other speakers people had at this event (several areas of music @ a hotel party).

I've heard swapping out the mid for a sealed speaker (I think eminence makes one) is the way to go if you buy them.

When i looked at them, they looked like a $2,000 box...but they sound like a $600 one. Not super loud either + You'll need 4 to do most areas (60x40).

They have good resale value though when / if you decide to upgrade.

Eminence Beta8A works well. Sounds much better then the stock driver. Though it's not a "sealed" speaker. The mid is in it's own plastic housing though, separate from the rest of the box.

No, not at all. I had trouble getting $600 for the pair when I sold mine. They looked brand new too.

The only thing that sounded "good" on those boxes was the B&C HF.

I'd rather have the Yamaha club series boxes.

I had the chance to buy Evan's TRx's with the mids... he talked me out of buying his.

I thought at the time they sounded good... then I heard the U15s the next day... debated about the speakers... I ended up with the U15s. I love the U15s!!!!

I'm using: EV QRx212 over JBL SRX718s(2) with Crown IT's and MRX512m & MRX525 on monitors with XTi's; all controlled by Yamaha LS9-32.  I have a bunch of other stuff too.
