Or even 300'. 600' and you're going to need a LOT of HF horsepower, which very few modern products have.

This is for a vocal PA, I don't think extreme highs or extreme lows are an issue.

There was someone on the Marketplace selling 6 MSL6s recently. Three per side of those would be a great vocal PA in this situation. 90º horizontal coverage, and a lot of throw.

Ben,

I agree with both Doug and Mac's suggestions. The Meyer products mentioned, will give your client the best value. The other product to look at is the Tannoy VQ series.

Interestingly enough, Danley has several systems in use in Africa, at least two of which are in Tansania.  These "venues" are unlike anything I've seen in the states in that they will erect a tent out in the middle of a huge field seating literally ten thousand+ and the crowds outside the tent are many times larger. It is fairly common for them to have folks as far as the eye can see.

When we did the Obama gig under the Arch here, he was clearly understood over 600' away and there was no HF to speak of out there.   100K + in attendance.

What about doing it old-School: http://www.jblpro.com/pages/pub/components/23929394.pdf
 ;D
Driven with modern dsp and amps i'm pretty sure you would get a lot of coverage for the money. 6 horns on a scaffold would be a very cheap delay-system.

Hmmm, for a vocal reinforcement system, this looks appealing.  Checking the power handling on the compression driver, it looks like this could be done pretty inexpensively with the 40x30 solution.

Even a cheap DSP would suffice.  Build some boxes for the horns and this could be a winner, for the application.

edit: this could be done for a hell of a lot less than $40K

I bet there wasn't! I suppose if Telco only does 4kHz, and you could probably get another octave past that out to 600' with several modern PAs, intelligibility wasn't a problem.

The Only thing that I haven't seen mentioned above and may or may not effect your situation is that many stadiums will have announcement systems rigged for the stands.  It may very well be possible for the larger meetings, to cover the field with say MSL4's and link into the "house" system to cover the stands.  Careful control of delays and speaker positioning should afford you the coverage you are looking for.  It's unlikely to be the best sound, but should be clear enough to get his message across.

Just a thought.

If weight wasn't an issue and if you could get them high enough,  2 powered Danley JH90's.
