12" Driver for long Horn like EAW LA 400
« on: September 06, 2006, 09:10:02 PM »

Hi
I'm thinking about building some 12 Inch long Horns similar to the EAW LA 400.

The only problem is to find the most suitable Speaker.
I'm planning to use 6-8 together per Stack.
I think it should have a very strong Motor (4" VC), a hard cone and not too less XMax.
In TSP this means high BL, low QT and about 6-9mm XMax.
I thought about the B&C 12NW100 http://www.bcspeakers.com
the BMS 12n820 http://www.bmspro.com/
or maby the RCF L12P300

What others would you suggest?
What other should I keep in focus?
What about Fs? How Important is it?

Thanks for Help!

P-audio SD-12

a purpose built horn driver with 4.5" VC, 600W rms /1200 program and a reinforced cone.

So what type of cabinet will it give 112dB @40Hz 1W input? A 28db rise of 600 watts over 1W.

Even if you refer to a 6 dB "peak" power of 2400Watts, then that gives a speaker sensitivity of 106dB @40Hz.

Lots of horns will give that level at higher freq but not at 40Hz.

Any plans?

Ivan...i think that's just his sig that you're referring to... "140dB at 40hz".

You managed to raise the most important point though! What cabinet design is going to be used? Recommending any of these drivers without knowing what they are being loaded onto is useless as they all require different parameters.

On a side note I'm not convinced by those SD series... 5mm of xmax?  Confused

Back to the OP, you need to give more info...like what are your design goals...cabinet size/weight, preferred low frequency cutoff etc.

whoaa

STOP, that's only my signature

this driver is recomended for a punisher type subwoofer

I am in the process of building 4 units loaded with this driver

on the other hand, the 5mm x-max/ direction is ok  (it is the mathematical excursion NOT calculated @ 10% THD as other manufacturers do so they can put out larger figures Evil or Very Mad )
