"Favorite" controller
« on: June 11, 2005, 05:37:05 PM »

I'm looking at a situation where I'll be controlling 6 Martin 918's (16 DMX channels ea) 4 MAC 250's (13 channels ea), 6 Chauvet stagewash 900's (4 channels ea)and possibly 12 Chauvet Colortrack color changers (6 dmx channels ea).  If I do the math right that's 28 fixtures & 256 dmx channels.  I might parallel the stagewashes so I'm down to 238 channels.  I'll have a real short setup time (In at 4:00 for a 8:00 show)so I'm looking for a controller for this mess that I can set up & program quickly.

Any recommendations?

Maybe a Fat Frog/Bull Frog is in order for the task you have at hand.

Take a Chamsys PC wing and a laptop PC. You will have time left for doing other things !

Best regards,

Looks cool, but apparently there's no U.S. distributor.
Hmmm...

I would choose one of the pc based controllers, such as LightJockey, Elation Compuclub, Hog PC, etc. because you can download the software today, set up the fixtures, and do 90% of the programming at home.  Then the only thing you'll need to do at the event is set any static positions, etc.  Just call your local rental house and ask which they have available.  If you use the Hog, I think you'll be able to also upload that to the new Hog IPC, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

Hi

I have Daslight Gold (cheap). 512 dmx chanels and you can get other interface then you have 1024 chanels.

Maybe it's not so good, but cheap. It depends what you wan't to do with your lights.

We're contemplating software & a widget-based system.  I'd like to find something with both a Mac & PC version so the producer & I can exchange show files.  Any recommendations?

I don't know of one.  Perhaps WYSIWYG can run on both platforms, but I'm no mac guy so I'm no help.  And W_____ is $$$

I've looked at and even used the Pearl before, but it's a higher $$ desk than the budget can stand.  If I go with a dedicated desk instead of the HW/SW route, I'm likely to go with the Leprecon LP-X24

http://www.leprecon.com/console_lp-X24.htm

It seems like a real slick product that lists at about $5K w/road case.  They don't have a visualizer product, but they do have an off-line editor so I could tweak a show from the comfort of home.  I have to say, of the visualizers/PC-based design tools I've loaded, I haven't been too impressed.  The Leviton/NSI Axis controller seems the least flaky, but I've had some problems w/it.  The Chauvet ShowExpress keeps giving me 'divide by zero' errors even when I load their demo show.  Martin MSD seems the most robust & reliable, but maybe that why it got a $2100 price tag.  Martin's USB version of Lightjockey runs about $1500 & I can add the fingers controller so I still have sliders (I'm kinda old school) but the fingers controller adds another $1250 to the pot.  By the time I buy all that & a suitable laptop to run it on, I'm not that far from $5K.  Not to mention trusting my show to a laptop...
