180b vs 1850
« on: April 06, 2005, 02:59:20 PM »

I have been using EVX 180's for about 4 years and have only
had the glue on one come apart. I have seen PD 1850
and was wondering if this driver will out preform the
EVX. I have read that the PD has only 1.6 db of power
compression at 800w but I don't know what the EVX
is I would guess around 3 db at 600w but I really have know
Idea. Someone posted that JBL's 2441 is 4.1 db at 600w.
Say EVX is 4.1 also that would be an increase of 2.5db
I would buy 12 new PD 1850 for that and the even tighter
bass.

Trying to judge a speaker on only 1 parameter is a bad idea.  You really need to look at all parameters for your needs-ie real sensitivity (not marketing hype ratings-such as rating a 2x18 @1800 Hz as 1 really big company does to get hig ratings)-freq response-cabinet requirements (tuning/type bass reflex-horn etc) among others.

For every complicated question-there is a simple- easy to understand WRONG answer.

Can I have some more talent in the monitors--PLEASE?

From my experience with my Keele 18" W's they sound the best
with a woofer with a low QTS and High BL the EVX 180b out preforms all of the woofers I have tried.

The Precision Devices PD 1850 offers more
xmax, than the Electrovoice EVX 180B.

So, you will have more output with the PD
1850 when excursion is the factor.

However, when excursion is not the factor,
both will be the same SPL wise.

But, seeing that the PD 1850 works best
in a horn box (QTS 0.212) and, the EVX 180B
will work in a reflex and/or horn enclosure
(QTS 0.266) you will get a lower cutoff with
the EVX 180B than the PD 1850.

I just scaled the internal chamber of the
Keele W Bin (The box in which the speaker
sits in). And, at a 35 Hertz tuning (Which
is the tuning btw), the PD 1850 offers a
- 3 db @ 97.29 Hertz, whereas, the EVX 180B
is 55.52 Hertz.

The Keele W Bin requires less xmax movement from
the driver due to the driver being a vented enclosure.

I would actually leave the EVX 180B's unless you
are exceeding their xmax (Severe popping noise)

Hope This Helps.

Best Regards,

Thanks that makes a lot of sense. I have never had a
problem with popping or any other anomaly out side of
distortion associated with having my low pass filter
set to low. Thanks, Nathan KDS&L
