Equalizer Suggestions
« on: October 27, 2004, 07:21:17 PM »

Hello,
I'm a researcher working with people with hearing loss. I'm looking for suggestions for a graphic equalizer that I can use solely for frequency shaping (I don't need or want to pay for if possible other options). I'm looking for one that is digitally programmable with the ability to save the programmed settings for recall. I will need stereo input and separate processing in each channel. I'll also need the ability to do some pretty sharp frequency shaping as the input is speech (rolls off ~6 dB/octave above 500 Hz) and the subjects have high frequency hearing loss. This will require at times substantial high frequency shaping. Finally, the input speech needs to be time locked to the a visual signal so long processing delays could be a real problem.

I'd appreciate any suggestions people might have.

Thanks,

Ben

I'd look at the various 2x2 DSP units available, assuming that you will be controlling the device from a computer.  Some that come to mind are the QSC DSP-30, dbx Driverack 220i, Sabine Graphi-q, Rane RPM-2, Shure dfr-22, and Symetrix 322.

Behringer DEQ 2496.
Does all you need plus has a RTA that can be linked to input/output/or reference mic.

What do you all think about Rane EQs, Compressors, and Gates?  I have been looking at the Rane C4 (compressor) and the G4 (gate).

Thanks in advance!

Hi Ben
I would have a look at the Sabine "Power Q".

http://www.sabine.com/newsite/pqlive/adf4000a.htm

This unit has every feature you have requested as well as 12 parametrics per channel that will give you everything from +12 to -84dB in one dB increments. You can purchase it with an RS232 kit so it can be controlled in real time via a PC. It also has a RTA and, unlike some other units, you can run the graphic and the RTA at the same time. I know it is not in the same price catagory as some of the suggested units but if you need to boost the highs, without adding noise, and also need to do some serious shaping, you might need a unit of this standard.

Hey, if they're good enough for NASA they must be doing something right!
