Kevin Dubrow Heads Up!?
« on: May 05, 2004, 10:04:07 PM »

Just booked a show for here in Connecticut with Kevin Dubrow later in May.

Anyone have any experience with their show?

Small venue , small stage....should be fun!

yes no matter what you have, it still wont be loud enough. no engineer, butplenty of hassles.  watch out for the drummer we had 2 double 18s and 2 15s and 2 inch horns and it was in protection all night never could get loud enough.

QR drummer wants it loud.  When Kevin is hitting his knee or the side of his leg, it means more sidefills.

Good luck.

Hello,

We just had them last week, piece of cake. I don't know what the bitching is about. Very Simple straight forward, 4 Monitor mixes. They know a good monitor mix from getting by, nothing outrageous. They do not have a LD, FOH or MON engineer with them.
Kevin has a wireless with a harmonizer, you need a DI for. He also carries his own IEM, that he runs of his wireless, no aux needed.
The drummer is the singer from Racer X, I think he also was drumming with Lynch Mob for a while.

We had an easy fun day, I enjoyed mixing them, tell Kevin Lefty said hello.

Here is the input list :

INPUT LIST

1 KICK
2 SNARE TOP
3 SNARE BOTTOM
4 HI HAT
5 RACK TOM
6 FLOOR TOM
7 FLOOR TOM
8 RIDE
9 OVERHEAD LEFT
10 OVERHEAD RIGHT
11 BASS LINE IN
12 BASS MIC
13 GUITAR WET SIDE: OUTSIDE FAR STAGE LEFT CABINET
14 GUITAR DRY SIDE: INSIDE CABINET/NEXT TO DRUMS
15 BACKING VOCALS: STAGE LEFT
16 LEAD VOCAL: WIRELESS RACK
18 BACKING VOCAL: STAGE RIGHT
19 DRUM VOX

Yep LEFTY,

"Just shows to go ya"
the boys have little or no "mercy" if you don't have gear that does the trick (ie: REALLY WORKS) or the smarts to put it into practice.
Put TEXAS HEADPHONES on the drummer (we used a Lab Sub/side along with a 1232/side on the drummer) and the first thing he said was "turn it down!" when he smacked that kick. Beta 52 and SM 91 on kick.

He's gone to IEMs, true. We did them when he didn't use those.
But be prepared(just in case the RF gets the IEMs) to do an X-Y monitor pair for Kevin with sifefills that really do match the wedges in output. Give him a Beta 58a. He works the presence peak. DO NOT make the wedges "disappear" with the fills. Just one or 2 dB less in the fills, and they will put on a good show and shake your hand when they leave for the night.

You gotta understand, these guys HAVE heard it all, and if your still cutting your teeth because they are playing smaller venues and your LOW BIDDER, that's not their problem.
They may be hearing impaired, but they're NOT deaf!
Neither am I.
Long live the 80's.

Old grey beard,
Dan o:)

About the drummer...

Hello.

From what I know, Frankie Banali is not touring with Kevin DuBrow. Frankie did develop a reputation for wanting a stupid loud monitor mix. Perhaps, you won't have to sweat that out. I read a brief snippet of an interview with Kevin DuBrow where he elluded to splitting with Quiet Riot because he was tired of other band members' unrealistic expectations about production capabilities in 300 seat clubs.

Good luck,

Thanks for the info Lefty.

Are you on the east cost / new england area?  Reason I ask is that I believe that he may use different guys in different part s of the country....at least from what I've read.

This club we're doing the show at has a stage that is approx 12' deep and 15' across.  Real small area.......the room is tight also ...viewing/listening bar area holds about 200.

3 opening bands....all are using headliners drum kit......which is common practice in this club due to stage size.

Glad to hear about the IEM.....makes life a little easier......especially when your stuck using a closet for a stage.

Hey Jeff,
Northern NY, I think you are right, he does use different members as needed. He is the boss, so it shouldn't make a big difference.
