When the cost of sending messages drops, and the volume of messages sent skyrockets, quality control suffers.

Telegraph and Ham radio operators, communicating by Morse Code, often abbreviate words by leaving out vowels and other unessential letters to make for faster keying and transcription times.

See, the kids with their newfangled technology have been typing incorrectly and intentionally misspelling words for more than 150 years.  :o

When you are limited to 140 characters per text message, why should you use 'two' instead of '2' or 'are' instead of 'r'?

^^ What Justice said.

no one is forcing you to type that way. And if you can't understand it tell the person you don't understand.

FYI English is an evolving language that has adapted many words from other languages. What you are describing is nothing new to your precious English language.

...with proper grammer and spelling?

Er, right.  I'm sure you meant grammar.

That's embarrassing.

I do agree with Dennis in that people need to be more aware of the professionalism required in some scenarios. If your friend talks with you poorly and it bothers you, you don't have to be their friend. However, if someone in a professional environment, they should be aware of the linguistic tolerances of who they are speaking with, and play it on the safe side.

Here at least, it's common for phones to just let your message "spill over" onto the next one if it becomes longer than the limit of one message (which is 160 characters here).  I think the limit on my phone is 6 messages as one, and they all show up as one long message on the receiving end.

I have a phone subscription intended for small businesses and pay a flat rate that includes 3000 minutes and 3000 texts as well as a set amount of data download that I can't remember.  I have never exceeded the limit.

FWIW, I'd say 85% of the texts I receive were typed with T9 word-recognition and as such, are fairly easy to read.
