Light design for compact stage
« on: July 07, 2011, 04:54:31 AM »

Hi I'm working at a label where we make smaller "in-house" concerts with our artists for a small audience while recording it all on video and putting it on Youtube (seea video here: http://goo.gl/gcCT3).
Normally we rent lighting, but its too expensive so we're looking for a solution that can be here all the time... The stage is about 5 x 5 meters and the hight is about max 3 meters (it can be seen on the video).

I've found this great recording where I really think the lighting looks magnificent (also see attachments for screenshots)!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjEsAEsYCw4

It seems there are som PAR lamps behind, but I have no idea whats up front, so the pictures gets as good as they are...

Can anyone here recommend what we should look after and how we can get this very warm look?

From the video you linked it looks like you're using some really good LED fixtures. To get the warmer effect you can do several things: use a color gel ($10/sheet), use a WWA LED fixture (~$500/each), alter the white balance on your cameras (free but could cause other issues).

At the very least, you should set a budget then hire a lighting designer for best results. A good LD can give the best options for have a few lights that are versatile enough to do anything you want.

Hope this helps,

there isn't a single LED in there that I can tell

Par 64s in the air behind, open white, no gel

in front there's probably a few 1-2k fresnels reflected back onto the stage, one from stage right more direct than one stage left as his left side is more shadowed, therefore less light

may have some CTO on the front stuff to get the fresnels to match the color temperature of the pars, either that or it's just some more pars, although it's more difficult to get that even of a wash out of par cans

as for the whole orange/yellow look that the video has, it's due to adjustments that have been made on the camera...

he's got a couple videos that were done on that 'stage' actually...

Great! Thanks guys!

We're really on a budget, so we've been thinking of buying maybe 12-14 par lamps and test that out (a fresnel like this http://goo.gl/p1xEd
aint any good or?)...

But good idea about a light-designer. Might be cheaper to get one to look at the place and come with the right decisions for us instead of trying "blindly" to get it right

that's a really budget fresnel, but it *might* do the trick

look at some colortran fresnels or the new ETC Source 4 fresnels (havn't actually gotten to use these yet, but they look awesome!)

remember that what looks good on video may not look good in person! Film lighting is a fickle mistress...
