Seems to work quite well.

I use those bleach soaked handy-wipe type of towels (which are dispensed from a cynlindar container) that are made my Chlorox.  They can be picked up at any grocery store in the isle that has cleaning products.

Use wipes with BZK (benzylalkonium chloride) instead of alcohol or chlorine bleach.  BZK is a quarternary ammonia compound that is used in surface sanitation for medical and food processing.  You can purchase BZK wipes from any major first-aid supplier.

BZK is also the primary ingredient in non-alcohol baby wipes.  Do a bit of shopping in the baby products aisle and you'll find them.

BZK does not attack the foam beneath the mic grille the way alcohol or chlorine will, and it has no peculiar odor.  A small whiff of chlorine is usually sufficient to make many singers drop the mic on the floor... I'm not joking.

Another "in a pinch" sanitizer is mouthwash (Listerine), but the primary bateriostatic is alcohol.

ps... consider taking the grilles off of SM-58 and similar microphones, put them in a lingerie bag and place them in your dishwasher (top rack).  Alternately, use a small amount of dish washing liquid and warm water to soak them in, and use an old toothbrush to clean the metal surfaces of lipstick and organic matter.

  +1 what Tim said. Also, purchase enough spare mic balls to change out the mics in the middle of the festival or event. Then clean the dirty ones and repeat at next festival!

I have never understood why this continues to be such a voodoo topic year in and year out.  This technique has worked on the hundreds of mics I've had over the last 30 years or so.  It's not something that works for between every set of a festival but for between show and shop inventory maintenance its just fine.

1 - fill a sink or large pan with warm water and mild dish detergent
2- unscrew mic balls and place in pan
3- swish the mic balls around in the water and let sit for an additional 15 minutes
4 - rinse the windscreens both inside and outside with warm water under the tap
5 - let air dry and replace on mics

for really grungy lip stick and worse use and old toothbrush to loosen the crud and swish it again

+1 on Microphome.

This stuff is fantastic. One squirt of foam in the palm, rub it on the grille, let it evaporate (a couple minutes) and you're done. Sterilized, deodorized, no residue. Way better than wipes IMHO - no waste. You get over 100 cleanings from a small bottle, costs about $10 IIRC via Amazon, Full Compass, etc.

Highly recommended. Every tour, every club, every church should carry this stuff. Studio cats, too -- because it's a foam, the solvent sticks to the grille and won't harm internal electronics. And talent LOVES it when you come out and sterilize their mic before a session.
