Wow, 140+ views and no comments?

OK. Those are neat towers. Is that a manufactured product? What is the weight and height limit?

Towers are from Applied Electronics, total tower height limit is 25', weight limit is 1200#.  Towers use a custom front outrigger that extends past the end of the cantilever arm.  Applied has more info by email as this isn't a catalog item yet.  Total weight of the 4887 hang is under 600#.

Note that we built the towers to 27' (don't tell anyone) to get the trim height we needed for the webcast cameras.

I guess I should have posted the rats nest of cables backstage... ;)

Cool towers!! Out of curiosity though. I assume you could have flown the boxes in that room. What made the decision to ground support? Cost? If cost how much did you save?

( I'd like to see the tower base too....show, show, show!)

What were you using as front fill?  Was there live music?

How many channels of what model console?

   Nice little gig.

The short answer to the long story - when the athletic association renovated the arena 5 years ago, they added additional weight to the roof, then removed some suspended load (lighter scoreboard).  New engineering studies regarding additional loading weren't done at the time.  To hang 600# per side, the university requires structural engineering review at our expense.  The winning bid amount doesn't allow for that expense.  And rigging went from "difficult" to "major pain in the ass" as part of the renovation, so there is a surcharge for that...

They've very happy with the audible results, as am I.  The biggest problem in that room is the HVAC noise.  Probably contributes 15dB to the noise floor...

Have fun, good luck.

It's all recorded music except for fanfare trumpets and the TTBB a capella quartet that sings the national anthem and the alma mater.  I freelance another uni ceremony in another arena and they have an orchestra that I pick up with a stereo pair :D

Console was Avid SC48, 6 inputs of playback, 3 lectern mics, 1 VOG mic, 1 console TB to mons for rehearsals.  Outputs were main hang, subs, off-stage fills, front fills, dias monitors, webcast feed 1, webcast feed 2, hearing assistance.

Front fills and dias monitors are EAW SM122.  Main hangs are VT4887.  We did a demo for the university and the Person In Charge liked 87s for the mains.  In this case, the lack of LF directivity from coupling more 4889s made for a good compromise as short ground stacks for the LL/RR.  All I-Tech power.

Tower outrigger pic here:  here

The worst part of the gig is staying awake during rehearsals.  Showtime is still fun.  I'm proud of every student that graduates.

Nice, and thanks for filling in the gig's gear.  I bet the choir felt (and Sounded) pretty professional. ;D

At least you got a chance to do rehearsals....the last Grad gig I did (a few years back) was a walk-in gig, all last minute.  Of course, no rehearsal, no mic check/line check and was handed a CD of the Commencement Song as a walked up to the already set-up Foh.

With 800 graduates, I was told that I'd have to keep playing the Commencement Song over and over until the last Student was seated.  Thank goodness there was some DJ type CD player, as I learned how to do  loops on the fly. :'(

Well, Congrats to all...I'm sure your audio was great!

  Cheers,

The "other" commencement I mentioned, with the orchestra... is a walk-on for them.  My check of the choir is their warm up on stage.  The orchestra tuning is my check for them.  The only sources that are definite are the lectern and name-reader microphones.

That gig has Imag, so the bottom of the PA has to clear the sight line of the top row of seats.  I put up 12 Meyer M2D, trimmed to 50' at the top box.  More supplemental fills, more sends, no subs for the orchestra, no dais monitors :(  Still, a good 2 days at work.
