Out of band technology?
« on: May 10, 2011, 05:51:38 PM »

I wonder what they mean by "out-of-band-technology" in the third paragraph, and if it will have any impact on currently available bands for entertainment technology. It is also an interesting point that with the sudden government interest in our phones knowing our location, suddenly the government has a use for that very information.

Mac,

I don't know if this is what they meant or not.

Consumers will receive three types of alerts from the service: alerts from the U.S. president, alerts involving imminent threats within a specific region and Amber Alerts, the U.S. government’s alert for missing children. Users can opt out of all but presidential alerts.

Does this mean if I opt out, The President is still gong to give me a heads up when he comes to take my guns away?

Damn, did I just turn this into a political thread?  :-X

From what I read in the article, "the government" has no knowledge (or need) of your location. It broadcasts from the tower(s) closest to "the emergency". Nothing more, and not carrying the sinister overtones of the recent smartphone mapping revelation.
