Question on speakers with our powered mixer
« on: February 03, 2008, 12:08:24 am »

We have a Yamaha EMX5016cf powered mixer two Peavey main speakers.  They are rated at 4 ohms.

The instruction manual states that two speakers should be 4-8 ohms.  We have thought of adding a second set and running them in parallel but the instructions state when running four speakers that way they should be 8-16 ohms.

Are we looking at needing to get 4 speakers instead of adding a second pair?

Apparently, the Yamaha is designed to drive a 4 Ohm to 8 Ohm load per channel.  That can be a single 4 to 8 Ohm speaker or two parallelled 8 to 16 Ohm speakers on each channel.  So you could not parallel another speaker with your existing 4 Ohm speakers as that would result in a load less than what the Yamaha is rated to drive.

What is the purpose of the second speakers?  For many applications you may not want them driven off the same amp output anyways.
