Post Fader Direct Out on LS9
« on: April 11, 2011, 05:04:37 PM »

Is it possible??? I am trying to track to an HD24 using layer 1 on LS9 as inputs and layer 2 as returns. Obviously it can be done without doing this but its just so much easier to manage small level changes without adjusting headamps especially since the headamps are jerky.

Any ideas???

At present the only way I know to do this is with an external computer connected via midi to the LS9.  See below.  Most of this information came from:

http://www.checkcheckonetwo.com/forum/showthread.php?998-Post-Fader-Direct-outs-on-LS9

I have tested this set up and it works great, HOWEVER I have never yet used it live.  In addition, there are some other interesting things you can do with this set up... read on!

Post-Fader Direct Outs On The LS9 Using Midi

It is possible to have post fader direct outs on the Yamaha LS9 by using an external computer, a USB midi adapter, and Bome’s Midi Translator Pro software. (http://www.bome.com/midi/translator).

Post Fader Direct Outs are achieved by taking the channel level codes, sent via midi out from the LS9, and “translating” them into new midi messages that are sent back to the LS9 which proportionately raise and lower the levels of the direct outputs.  Every time a channel fader is moved, the direct output level is changed accordingly.  Bear in mind however that that you lose control of the manual level of the direct out.  This is not likely to be a problem for most, at least not while using this setup.

In Bome Midi Translator set:

Incoming Midi Trigger: F0 43 10 3E 12 01 00 33 00 00 00 oo 00 00 00 qq pp F7
Outgoing Midi Trigger: F0 43 10 3E 12 01 00 2F 00 02 00 oo 00 00 00 qq pp F7

Make sure your preset is “checked” and in the pull down menu under TRANSLATE you select “Activate”.

IMPORTANT: Make sure the midi preferences in the LS9 are set so "Parameter Change" TX and RX are ACTIVE, and everything else is disabled.  If the "Control Change" TX and RX are active, the translator will not work.  Make sure they are disabled.

Why do you want the direct outs to be post fader?  I'd think that you'd want them pre everything.

I think it's to mimic the small fader/large fader operation of a typical in-line studio console.  The small fader/top layer sends to the recorder, while the large fader/bottom layer mixes the tracks down to a monitor mix (or something like that).  The input gain controls only work in 1 dB steps, and have the problem of a glitch between -13 and -14 when the pad switches out.

Still the record level should be a more or less "set it and forget it" thing.

I often want my direct out post fader to feed an automixer like the Shure SCM810.

Yes, it should. Also - why would someone want to make small changes to the gain like that in the digital domain? That wouldn't do any good AFAICS. You'd get uneven/jumping levels on tape that you'd have to compensate for in mixdown and the true resolution would be unaltered since the AD-input is untouched.

Useless just like "digital zoom" on consumer cameras.

I do my recording the other way around.
24 channels of preamps directly into a Mackie MDR recorder.
Output from that to the mixer for metering, monitoring and playback.
Only one mix setting needed, with no switching.
The mixer output is proof of recording signal chain integrity.
I can do anything I want on the mixer, compression reverb, odd mixes, ad it doesn't screw up the recording.
All of the recorder outputs are available for studio monitoring or live show output.
